God of War Ragnarok Datamine Reveals Deleted Cutscene That Hints at Next Game

A fan recently explored unused files within God of War Ragnarok, and their findings could suggest where the series might go next. God of War Ragnarok, released in 2022 as a sequel to the 2018 God of War reboot, concludes the Norse saga but leaves possibilities for future stories.

The God of War series, now known for its Norse mythology setting, originally started as a trilogy of games for the PlayStation 2, taking place in Ancient Greece. These games followed Kratos, a Spartan warrior tasked by the goddess Athena to get revenge on Ares, the god of war and Kratos’s former teacher. As the story progressed, Kratos became more powerful and his mission grew in scope. Recently, Santa Monica Studios announced they are rebuilding the original trilogy for today’s consoles. Alongside this announcement, they also released God of War: Sons of Sparta, a prequel that tells an earlier part of the story.

A fan of God of War Ragnarok might have discovered clues about the future of the series by digging into the game’s unused cutscenes. Reddit user TheMorse_ shared details of several cutscenes found within the game’s files. One scene features figures believed to be gods talking about Kratos and his son, Atreus. The post suggests one of these figures could be Athena, who appeared as a vision in the 2018 God of War and played a key role in the earlier games. This character, wearing a concealing robe, says the Greek phrase “To lefkó fídi tha se fáei,” which translates to “The white snake will eat you.” It’s currently unknown what or who this “white snake” refers to, though the massive serpent Jörmungandr is a prominent part of the story in both Norse God of War games.

A newly discovered cutscene shows Atreus talking to a character named Mau. The name “Mau” means “cat” in Egyptian and is connected to a form of the Egyptian god Ra. This could explain the white snake seen in an earlier cutscene – in Egyptian myths, a white serpent named Apophis fought Ra daily and always lost. Because of this discovery, many fans believe the next God of War game might take place in Egypt, and this new evidence seems to support that theory.

A lot of players think the next God of War game might center around Atreus, Kratos’ son, who has the potential to become the new main character. He played a crucial part in both the 2018 God of War and God of War Ragnarok, making him a natural choice to lead the story. Recent discoveries hint that Santa Monica Studio is indeed planning this, but it remains to be seen how this change will impact the series going forward.
