As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of Kratos from a Spartan warrior to a Norse god in the God of War series. The latest installment, Ragnarok, was a masterpiece that brought the saga to an epic conclusion… or so I thought.

In an exhilarating portrayal, God of War Ragnarok depicted the epic conflict named after it. Kratos, along with his companions, banded together to thwart Odin and put an end to his rule. Despite the Norse mythology narrative appearing brief in totality, players were pleasantly surprised last year with a fresh installment for God of War Ragnarok. The creators at Santa Monica Studio astonished many when they released a free DLC for Ragnarok titled Valhalla, offering a thrilling rogue-like adventure through the Norse domain.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard about a free DLC for Valhalla. But what really made my day was the additional chapters that filled out Kratos’ story. At the end of Ragnarok, Kratos and Atreus went their separate ways, with Atreus embarking on a quest to find the remaining Giants. Meanwhile, Kratos remained in the Norse realm, and his journey there reached its climax when Tyr put him through a series of trials. These trials were designed to prove his divine worth and help Kratos come to terms with himself. This expansion brought some well-deserved tranquility to Kratos’ life, but it also raises concerns about the future direction of the franchise and its potential unwillingness to let go of this iconic character.

The God of War Franchise May Not Be Able to Move On From Kratos

Atreus’ Solo Venture Might Not Be Solo After All

Following the emotional farewell between Kratos and Atreus in the finale of Ragnarok, there’s a popular notion that the series might be preparing Atreus for his own game. Emphasizing Atreus could be a daring choice for the franchise, but it seems almost unavoidable. Even if an Atreus-centered installment is just a spin-off, Valhalla hinted that the saga as a whole might find it challenging to exclude Kratos from future events.

Absolutely, the idea of a God of War game focusing on Atreus rather than Kratos could stir up quite a debate. While Atreus is an intriguing character, doubts about his readiness to fill Kratos’ shoes are understandable. However, for the ending of Ragnarok to feel as fulfilling as possible, having Atreus venture out on his own without Kratos in the story could provide a richer exploration of his character. The double-protagonist approach in Ragnarok gave us a taste of what a solo game as Atreus might look like, but Kratos’ influence was still significant, even when he wasn’t visibly present.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel excited if the whispers about a standalone Atreus game are true! Imagining him navigating challenges all on his own, without the guiding hand of his father, sounds like an incredible journey. Some folks may have doubts about Atreus’ strength as a solo protagonist, but giving him his own game or even a spin-off could be the perfect opportunity to demonstrate that he’s more than capable of stealing the limelight.

God of War Branching Out Into Unknown Territory

Finally Cutting the Kratos Cord

In a hypothetical “God of War” game focused on Atreus doesn’t necessarily mean Kratos is permanently out of the picture; rather, it presents an intriguing opportunity to explore if the series can thrive without him. The narrative direction for “God of War” remains uncertain, but expanding the franchise’s scope could inject fresh energy into the beloved series. After close to two decades, Kratos has been the driving force behind the franchise, and as his character ages, there may come a time when he decides to step aside. Instead, we might witness a new era in the “God of War” saga.

Despite the fact that Valhalla beautifully portrayed a compelling story within the Norse epoch, Kratos’ journey in the expansion served as an effective prelude to his farewell. However, if Kratos persists in appearing across multiple games, particularly the rumored standalone spin-off centered around Atreus, it may gradually diminish the impact of Valhalla’s finale.
