This article contains spoilers for God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok (2022).
In 2017, the animation director of God of War, Bruno Velasquez, hinted that all mythologies coexist within the game’s universe, much like how they do in reality. Later on, he suggested that even the Abrahamic religions are part of the game, showing a screenshot from God of War 2 featuring Kratos standing before a mural depicting the Three Wise Men from the Bible. This creative approach expanded the horizons of the PlayStation’s iconic franchise, leaving open the possibility of Kratos’ future involvement. However, one fact remains undeniable: players crave more God of War.
This year, the gaming franchise I’m deeply fond of celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in my own gaming journey. The wrap-up of God of War: Ragnarok and the upcoming God of War Amazon TV series have ignited a flurry of speculation among fans about where Kratos and Atreus will venture next. The intriguing hints of uncharted mythologies woven into God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok have fueled these theories, offering tantalizing glimpses into potential new realms that could offer decades-long epic journeys for our heroic duo. In an ideal world, Kratos and Atreus would embark on these adventures hand in hand, forging alliances with new friends as they continue their relentless pursuit to bring down the gods.
Future Settings Teased in God of War and God of War Ragnarok
- Celtic
- Egyptian
- Japanese
- Mayan
Celtic/Arthurian Mythology
In God of War, various elements derived from Celtic mythology are incorporated into the storyline. One such element is the Triskele, a three-spiral symbol that bears resemblance to Norse symbols but has roots in Celtic mythology as well. Another instance is when Mimir makes references to Celtic tales, hinting at his past connections. He speaks of Avalon, a legendary island known for its faeries, such as Oberon and Titania, who are famously depicted in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Mimir even claims to have gone by the names “Puck” and “Robin of the Goodfellows,” which may account for his distinctive Scottish accent in the game.
Ancient Egyptian Mythology
One widely-held fan speculation proposes that the upcoming God of War game could be set in ancient Egypt, given numerous hints throughout the series. For instance, a tapestry in God of War shows the Great Pyramids, while another depicts the Eye of Ra. An ankh can also be found as a hidden bonus in God of War Ragnarok. Additionally, a prequel comic, God of War: Fallen God, presents Kratos in a desert setting with subtle allusions to ancient Egypt. Furthermore, early concept art for the 2018 version of God of War features Kratos and Atreus fighting against Egyptian myths, further fueling this theory. In summary, it appears that the creators have been thinking deeply about ancient Egypt for the upcoming game.
Japanese (AKA Shinto) Mythology
The very mural illustrating Tyr’s ancient Egyptian journeys additionally portrays two figures near a torii gate bearing a Japanese kanji inscription. In another depiction of Tyr, you’ll find the Tomoe symbol, often linked to the Shinto deity of War and Archery in Japan. Notably, during his battle against Tyr in “God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla“, Tyr wields a nodachi – a traditional samurai sword – against Kratos, providing tangible evidence of his travels to that region.
Mayan/Mesoamerican Mythology
In the same intricate artwork detailing Tyr’s journeys to ancient Egypt, Japan, and Mesoamerica, you’ll find an illustration of Mesoamerican pyramids. This isn’t the only nod to Mayan mythology. Just as Shinto beliefs are interwoven, Tyr wields the macuahuitl – the sharp-toothed clubs from the hands of the Mayans – in combat against Kratos. Furthermore, God of War game designer Cory Barlog has hinted that future God of War installments may delve into Mayan mythology, suggesting a potential role for the Mayans in the series’ future.
