As a hardcore Godzilla fan who grew up watching the iconic monster movies from the 1950s and 60s, I am beyond excited that Netflix is adding the black and white version of “Godzilla Minus One” (also known as “Minus Color”) to their streaming platform. The original Godzilla films hold a special place in my heart, and the monochrome visuals perfectly capture the nostalgic feel of that era.

Starting next month, you can watch another Godzilla film on Netflix. This new release may not bring a fresh storyline but promises a unique experience as it is the monochrome adaptation of Godzilla Minus One.

Netflix hosts a variety of films and series under the Godzilla banner, such as “Godzilla vs. Kong” (2021), “Godzilla Singular Point,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “GODZILLA City on the Edge of Battle” (2018), and “GODZILLA Planet of the Monsters” (2017). The most recent addition, “Godzilla Minus One,” debuted last month and is now available for streaming. It’s worth noting that the black-and-white version of this project, titled “Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color,” will soon follow suit and become accessible on Netflix as well.

Netflix revealed that the classic black-and-white film “Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color” will soon be available to stream on their platform, as reported by Geek Tyrant. This version doesn’t only heighten the movie’s sense of realism; the monochrome lighting adds authenticity to the Godzilla experience. Set in the aftermath of World War II when Japan was recovering, “Godzilla Minus One” delivers a more intense and terrifying Godzilla encounter. The black-and-white presentation takes us back in time and intensifies the film’s impact by reflecting the 1950s ambiance of the original Godzilla movie. Director Takashi Yamazaki stated that transforming the film into monochrome was like creating a new production: “Instead of merely converting it to black-and-white, I had them make meticulous adjustments as if they were producing an entirely new film.”

Godzilla Minus One, which premiered on Netflix on June 1, has gained significant popularity for its captivating plot and stunning visual effects. The film boasts impressive quality, earning it the Best Visual Effects Oscar at the 2024 Academy Awards in March. In a conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Yamazaki shared that he initiated the monster’s conceptualization through initial drawings and sculpture models. However, artist Kosuke Taguchi was instrumental in refining the design. Yamazaki expressed their intent to make the monster appear “extremely cool” for the movie, incorporating a dinosaur origin into its skin texture. Additionally, they introduced the ability for the creature to regenerate when injured, making it distinct. Yamazaki explained, “Our goal was to reconnect with the fundamental meaning behind Godzilla. The monster serves as a metaphor for nuclear weapons, so we modeled its internal workings after those of a weapon. When wounded, each component would come together and cause an implosion, resulting in the emission of blue rays.”

The monochrome version of “Godzilla Minus One” is just as impressive as the full-color one, offering a unique experience for viewers. Although the vivid colors in the full-version make the ocean and mountains appear lifelike, and Godzilla’s blue glow serves as a warning before unleashing an atomic beam, the black and white version brings us closer to the original 1954 film. It also adds depth to Godzilla’s character, making it seem fiercer, bolder, and more dangerous. In essence, “Godzilla Minus Color” provides a distinctive and exhilarating take on this classic monster movie, making it a must-watch for fans who have already seen both versions.

Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color debuts on Netflix on August 1.
