Godzilla: What is Titanosaurus?

As a long-time fan of Godzilla and its expansive universe of monstrous creatures, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness when I think about Titanosaurus. This gentle giant, with his unique design and captivating backstory, is one of the most intriguing yet underappreciated creatures in the Godzilla lore.

Godzilla-like creatures exhibit remarkable diversity. Hailing from various renowned places, some dwell deep beneath the sea, while others inhabit the farthest corners of space. A select few have endured the test of time, such as Ghidorah and Mothra, who continue to captivate audiences with numerous adaptations and an abundance of associated content. However, the fate of many other colossal monsters is unfortunate; they vanish soon after their appearance, like Titanosaurus. Despite his brief tenure, his unique design leaves a lasting impression.

The Monsterverse will carry on with its rule, as proven by the huge success of “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire.” This film, marking Godzilla’s 70th anniversary, has brought in immense profits. With such achievement, the franchise might pick up some valuable insights. Previous attempts introduced legacy characters for a new audience, but the most successful ones created their own antagonists. Consequently, it seems likely that they will keep developing new Titans instead of relying on old names like Titanosaurus.

Where did Titanosaurus come from?

Titanosaurus, created by screenwriter Yukikio Takayama with artist Akihiko Iguchi, is both straightforward as a Godzilla monster and oddly unique. Takayama envisioned two dinosaurs named Titans, who intertwined their long necks and transformed into one titanic creature to battle Godzilla. The pair’s fusion resulted in the creation of Titanosaurus.

In the folklore, Titanosaurus is often spoken of as a mysterious, elusive dinosaur who managed to avoid detection for the past 66 million years. He can be compared to the Loch Ness Monster, a creature believed to exist based on sightings and rumors, living in seclusion in the depths of the Izu-Ogasawara Trench near the Bonin Islands. Titanosaurus was likely a gentle giant who flourished in the extreme deep waters, far beyond human reach.

What is Titanosaurus capable of?

Godzilla: What is Titanosaurus?

Titanosaurus is known to be one of the least formidable opponents when facing Godzilla. His most impressive attack comes from the massive fin on his tail. By moving it rapidly, Titanosaurus can generate hurricane-force winds or devastating whirlpools. These winds have been measured to exceed 700 miles per hour, which far surpasses the fastest wind speed ever recorded on earth, excluding tornadoes. The swiftest wind recorded during Tropical Cyclone Olivia reached only 253 miles per hour. Despite humans’ difficulties in measuring tornado winds accurately, even their most generous estimates fall short of Titanosaurus’ gusts by half. When the creature decides to unleash its destructive power, it can create consistent gales that rival the force of a nuclear blast, causing skyscrapers to topple and cities to crumble with just a flick of its tail. This devastating ability is essentially Titanosaurus’ only significant weapon. Although it can jump great heights and swim at remarkable speeds, it lacks other substantial powers. It’s essential to mention that Titanosaurus would not initiate combat but, unfortunately, humanity often forces the situation.

What happened to Titanosaurus?

Mafune employed Titanosaurus to obliterate a submerged vessel aiming to retrieve Mechagodzilla’s leftovers. In exchange, the extraterrestrials invited Mafune and his daughter Katsura into their community, with the condition that he kept using Titanosaurus for their objectives. However, Mafune was engrossed in reviving Mechagodzilla when INTERPOL persistently interfered. The initial time Godzilla entered the scene, Mafune was preoccupied with fending off humans attempting to halt him. An INTERPOL agent fired at Katsura, compelling the aliens to shield her and present her with Mechagodzilla’s control device. United, they vanquished Godzilla. INTERPOL triggered a sonic disrupter that weakened Mafune’s link to Titanosaurus, enabling Godzilla to exact vengeance. Godzilla annihilated Mechagodzilla and sent Titanosaurus tumbling off a cliff into the ocean beneath. Although most fans harbor hopes that Titanosaurus survived his harrowing experience, the movie doesn’t verify his survival.

In simpler terms, Titanosaurus is among the most amicable colossal beasts in the Godzilla series. He isn’t truly a kaiju; he’s merely a prehistoric dinosaur turned into a weapon. Fans can just wish for his peaceable retreat to the ocean depths. It feels unjust to yearn for Titanosaurus for another movie. Let him be in the trench instead.
