Summary
- Goku and Vegeta’s rivalry is the blueprint for Shonen anime rivalries.
- Their unique bond and character development has set a high standard that other series still haven’t been able to match.
- They are rivals who push each other to higher levels of power and growth, a trope that has been used by most Shonen series since then.
As a fervent fan of Shonen anime, I can’t help but appreciate one recurring theme that resonates deeply – the dynamic between the protagonist and their intense rival, often embodied as a complex, brooding character. This trope is ubiquitous across numerous Shonen franchises and holds a special place in many hearts. However, it’s the unique treatment of this trope in Dragon Ball, that stands out as the most captivating and influential for me.
Initially, when the franchise began, a single primary character named Son Goku, renowned globally, was the central figure. As the story unfolded and we reached “Dragon Ball Z”, a new character, Vegeta, emerged as Goku’s adversary. Over time, Vegeta evolved into a key supporting character, or secondary protagonist, by the time of “Super”. Here, we delve into the reasons why the rivalry between Goku and Vegeta is unparalleled in anime.
Goku And Vegeta Are The Blueprint For Anime Rivalries
They Did What No One Else Had
Goku’s First Appearance | Dragon Ball, Episode 1, “The Secret of the Dragon Balls” |
---|---|
Vegeta’s First Appearance | Dragon Ball Z, Episode 5, “Gohan’s Rage” |
The relationship between Goku and Vegeta is undeniably the most memorable rivalry in anime history, surpassing many others that came before it. While the success of Dragon Ball certainly plays a significant role, the quality of their rivalry also draws heavily from classic pairings like Joe and Rikiishi in Ashita no Joe and Amuro and Char in Mobile Suit Gundam. These earlier rivalries provided strong foundations, but Goku and Vegeta’s has taken those elements and significantly enhanced them.
Originally hailing from the dwindling Saiyan race, Goku and Vegeta forged an unusual connection since their very first encounter. Despite this bond, their perspectives on life were starkly contrasting, stemming from their distinct Saiyan upbringings – with Goku being nurtured as a savior figure, while Vegeta was bred to be a conqueror. This difference culminated in a fierce confrontation during the climactic battle of the Saiyan Saga, where they each poured every ounce of their strength into a legendary fight that stands among the most epic in anime history.
On this planet, we know that even the lowest-born can outdo the elite if they work hard enough!
As fans looked back later, the sparring match between Goku and Vegeta at the end of their fight turned out to be the foundation for one of the greatest anime rivalries. This was evident in the Namek Saga, where the Saiyan Prince reappeared on screen but was not an enemy to the heroes as he once had been; instead, he became a crucial ally during that arc. Tragically, Vegeta was killed by Frieza, but was later resurrected and made his way back to Earth. It wasn’t immediately clear at the time, but Goku’s kindness towards Vegeta would have a lasting impact on him, eventually transforming him into a hero.
Over time, Vegeta managed to achieve the same transformations as Goku, eventually joining the Z-Fighters as one of Earth’s powerful defenders. Initially, their contrasting beliefs led to fierce competition between them, but they eventually became rivals who inspired each other to reach greater power levels by emulating and surpassing one another’s strength, ultimately striving for self-improvement together.
The distinctive traits and strategies they exhibited in various scenarios were arguably the most memorable aspects. Goku, with his carefree and jovial disposition, often displayed empathy when opportunities arose, while Vegeta was characterized by his brooding demeanor and seriousness, demonstrating a more ruthless attitude. This contrast not only added layers to their characters but also laid the groundwork for the Shonen anime genre, influencing almost every series that followed in its wake.
In many popular anime series throughout history, the main character and supporting characters often have an extraordinary bond with distinct personalities. At first glance, these personalities may seem disparate, but they harmonize flawlessly, creating a compelling narrative formula that has significantly contributed to the success of some iconic anime shows and is expected to remain impactful in the future.
Some notable examples of such rivalries are:
- Naruto and Sasuke – Naruto
- Deku and Bakugo – My Hero Academia
- Gon and Killua – Hunter x Hunter
- Ichigo and Uryu/Renji – Bleach
- Yuji and Megumi – Jujutsu Kaisen
Why Goku And Vegeta Are Still The Greatest Rivalry
The First And Still The Best
The exceptional dynamic between Goku and Vegeta as rivals sets them apart from all others, primarily due to their distinctive relationship and contrasting personalities. In every situation, they exhibit unique approaches that align perfectly with their characters, enhancing their individual skills, particularly when they push each other’s limits. Goku, an exceptional prodigy in Martial Arts, outshines many others with his unparalleled talent, while Vegeta, the most dedicated warrior in the franchise, consistently exceeds expectations through sheer hard work.
The methods they use to attain power might differ, but it fits perfectly into the narrative that they both end up at comparable levels. Notably, Goku and Vegeta are among the last pure-blooded Saiyans in existence, which forms an unusual bond between them, a bond that has significantly influenced their character development. Despite never openly acknowledging it, this shared heritage may be more valuable to Goku than anything else, even his closest friend Krillin – except perhaps his family.
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
