Goku VS Vegeta: The Strongest Saiyan in Every Dragon Ball Super Saga

For most of Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta constantly lived in Goku’s shadow, especially after the Saiyan Saga. By the series’ end, Goku had become so much stronger that Vegeta’s story focused on acknowledging Goku as the superior fighter and letting go of their competitive rivalry. However, Dragon Ball Super has completely reversed this, shifting the power dynamic between them.

Although Goku initially had a significant power advantage over Vegeta, Vegeta quickly closed the gap in Dragon Ball Super, and even exceeded Goku’s strength at times. For most of the series, they’ve remained evenly matched, constantly pushing each other to improve through intense training and new transformations. However, with the events of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, one Saiyan is now clearly stronger than the other, and this difference is expected to continue unless the upcoming Black Frieza Saga brings major changes.

Battle of Gods: Goku

Super Saiyan God Goku is Infinitely Stronger Than SSJ2 Vegeta

In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Goku is initially more powerful than Vegeta because he performed the God Ritual. Becoming a Super Saiyan God gave Goku a power boost unlike anything the Saiyans had seen before in Dragon Ball Z, making him even stronger than Super Saiyan Vegito was at the series’ end. However, Vegeta does briefly become more powerful than Goku during the movie.

When Beerus slaps Bulma, Vegeta becomes incredibly angry, and his Super Saiyan 2 form becomes much more powerful than Goku’s Super Saiyan 3. Earlier in the movie, Goku as a Super Saiyan 3 struggled against Beerus, but Vegeta, as a Super Saiyan 2, is able to actually hit Beerus multiple times and even draw blood. Master Roshi points out that Vegeta has become stronger than Goku, emphasizing just how much more powerful Vegeta has become.

Resurrection F: Tied

Vegeta Catches Up to Goku In-Between Movies

After the fight with Beerus, Vegeta starts training with Whis on Beerus’ planet. He spends six months practicing on his own, learning how to use God Ki and getting significantly stronger than Goku. When Goku finally arrives to train as well, Vegeta is now his equal in power – which is remarkable considering Vegeta didn’t go through the same ritual Goku did to become a Super Saiyan God.

While Goku needed a special ritual to access God Ki, Vegeta achieves it through intense training and determination. By the time of Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, both Goku and Vegeta reach the same level of power and can do everything the other can, including transforming into Super Saiyan Blue simultaneously.

Universe 6 Tournament: Goku

Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken Goku Surpasses SSB Vegeta During the Final Battle With Hit

As a huge Dragon Ball Super fan, I’ve always loved the little differences between the manga and the anime! One thing that really stands out is the Universe 6 Tournament. In the manga, Goku and Vegeta actually end up on equal footing with Hit. Goku doesn’t pull out the Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken to win – he just overpowers Hit with plain SSB. Vegeta couldn’t manage that, though, because he spent too much energy showing off Super Saiyan Blue to Cabba earlier in the tournament. It’s a totally different story in the anime, which is pretty interesting to see!

As a huge Dragon Ball Super fan, I was blown away when Goku used Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken x20 against Hit! It was incredible seeing him stack Kaioken on top of Super Saiyan Blue – the power jump was massive, easily putting him far beyond Vegeta’s regular Super Saiyan Blue. Honestly, he would have won if he hadn’t realized Hit wasn’t even fighting at his best and decided to stop himself. It was a bit frustrating, but still an awesome display of power!

Goku Black: Tied

Vegeta’s Extra Training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber Makes Him Equal to Mastered Super Saiyan Blue Goku

Throughout the Goku Black Saga in both the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga, Goku and Vegeta are generally considered to be at similar power levels. However, some argue that Vegeta is actually stronger in the anime because he trains in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, while Goku doesn’t improve his power beyond what he already has.

During the manga’s story, Goku achieves a perfected Super Saiyan Blue form to close the gap in power between himself and his rivals. Regardless, the Goku Black Saga portrays Goku and Vegeta as equally strong – Vegeta thanks to his constant, intense training, and Goku due to his incredible natural abilities.

Tournament of Power: Goku

Super Saiyan Blue Evolved Vegeta’s Got Nothing on Ultra Instinct Goku

During the Tournament of Power, Goku is clearly much stronger than Vegeta. While Vegeta does achieve a more powerful version of Super Saiyan Blue after fighting Toppo, this boost doesn’t compare to Goku’s Ultra Instinct. Ultra Instinct is a unique and incredibly powerful transformation that puts Goku on a completely different level.

As a Dragon Ball fan, it’s amazing to see Ultra Instinct Goku in action! He absolutely crushed it against Jiren during the Tournament of Power – his speed and power were on another level. It’s a shame he couldn’t stay in that form long enough to finish Jiren off, but honestly, it was clear Ultra Instinct Goku was way, way stronger than even Super Saiyan Blue Evolved Vegeta. Vegeta’s powerful, no doubt, but he barely matched the sign of Ultra Instinct, and even that’s pushing it a little!

Broly: Tied

Goku & Vegeta Need To Be Equal in Power Level to Do the Fusion Dance

Watching Dragon Ball Super: Broly, it became clear that Goku and Vegeta were on pretty equal footing. After the Tournament of Power, Goku couldn’t reliably access Ultra Instinct, so he and Vegeta seemed to match each other in power throughout the movie. Neither one clearly outperformed the other when fighting Broly – they were both at roughly the same level. What really struck me was when they did the Fusion Dance; neither of them seemed to lose any power in the process, suggesting they were perfectly balanced again.

If Goku could access Ultra Instinct, he’d be much more powerful than Vegeta. However, the movie depicts him unable to activate it during his fight with Broly. It’s actually notable that Goku and Vegeta are now evenly matched, considering Goku would have needed to train extensively after the Tournament of Power to reach the same level as Vegeta’s enhanced Super Saiyan Blue form.

Galactic Patrol Prisoner: Goku

Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku Creates a New Gap Between Him & Vegeta

During the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, Goku and Vegeta both intensely train to prepare for their final battle against Moro. Vegeta travels to Yardrat to perfect his energy control and learn new techniques like Forced Spirit Fission and Instant Transmission. Meanwhile, Goku trains with Merus inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, striving to fully master the powerful Ultra Instinct transformation.

By the conclusion of the Moro arc, Goku can freely use Perfected Ultra Instinct, making the earlier form, Ultra Instinct Sign, unnecessary. This perfected form not only provides all the advantages of regular Ultra Instinct but also significantly improves Goku’s control over his energy. By the end of their fight, Moro’s own Ultra Instinct abilities couldn’t even harm Goku in Perfected Ultra Instinct – Goku withstood a direct hit to the chest that shattered Moro’s fist. Despite Vegeta’s intense training, he simply isn’t as powerful as Goku when Goku is using Perfected Ultra Instinct.

Granolah the Survivor: Vegeta

Ultra Ego Finally Gives Vegeta a Form to Rival Ultra Instinct Goku

The recent storyline featuring Granolah the Survivor provides Vegeta with a way to reach, and maybe even exceed, Goku’s power level. After intense training with Beerus, the God of Destruction gives Vegeta a special earring. This earring unlocks a new ability during his fight with Granolah, called Ultra Ego. Ultra Ego is essentially the opposite of Goku’s Ultra Instinct, drawing power from the principles of a God of Destruction.

Ultra Ego dramatically increases Vegeta’s power, and it actually gets stronger as he takes more damage and fights longer. While Vegeta hasn’t won a fight using this form yet, that’s simply because he’s still learning to control it. The transformation seems to make him even more powerful than Goku in his Ultra Instinct form, but Goku is more experienced and skilled with Ultra Instinct, allowing him to win battles where Vegeta struggles.

Super Hero: Vegeta

Vegeta Beats Goku Through Pure Skill

Throughout Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goku and Vegeta are engaged in an intense fight where they’re both restricted from using their powerful transformations. The purpose of the battle is to find out which Saiyan is truly stronger and more skilled in their natural state, and in a surprising turn of events, Vegeta ultimately wins.

Vegeta narrowly defeats Goku – he wins by knocking Goku out, but is also quickly defeated afterward. Still, Vegeta fought more effectively and landed a final blow, securing his victory. As of now, and before the Dragon Ball Super manga continues with the Black Frieza Saga, Vegeta is demonstrably stronger than Goku and currently holds the edge between the two.
