As a longtime gamer and a devoted fan of classic video games, I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Brett Jones, the talented artist who brought James Bond to life in GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64. Having grown up playing this iconic game, it’s hard to imagine how much of an impact Jones had on my childhood and the gaming industry as a whole.

Tragically, Brett Jones, a distinguished alumnus of Rare and creator of artwork for the iconic 1997 video game “GoldenEye 007” on Nintendo 64, has recently passed away. Jones spent a total of eight productive years at Rare from 1994 to 2002. In addition to “GoldenEye 007,” his artistic talents were also incorporated into the first-person shooter game “Perfect Dark,” which was released in 2000.

Jones contributed significantly to the design of James Bond’s famous costumes in “GoldenEye 007,” and was instrumental in creating Joanna Dark, the lead character of “Perfect Dark.” “GoldenEye” is a video game adaptation of the 1995 James Bond movie with Pierce Brosnan as the title character. The game came out two years after the film and just before the release of its sequel, “Tomorrow Never Dies.” In gaming circles, “Perfect Dark” is known as a spiritual successor to “GoldenEye 007,” which is widely regarded as one of the greatest spy espionage games. After leaving Rare in 2004, Jones became a successful VFX artist, working on major films such as “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Fast & Furious 6,” “The Last Jedi,” and “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” as well as TV shows including “Doctor Who.”

Dr. David Doak, a previous colleague of the late Brett Jones at Rare, announced his passing on Twitter today. He paid tribute to Jones with the words, “Rest in Peace Brett Jones – you were truly legendary.” I’m grateful that I had the chance to know Brett. A significant portion of what made GE007 and PD exceptional can be attributed to Brett’s artistic talent and mischievous sense of humor. In the wake of his passing, his family and friends have established a crowdfunding campaign to finance an art exhibition showcasing Jones’ work at Atkins Gallery in Leicestershire, UK.

Jones Flourished As A VFX Artist After Leaving Rare

Perfect Dark, a series originally developed by The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, is currently being rebooted. This project was first revealed at The Game Awards 2016, four years ago. Recently during the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft showcased a gameplay trailer for the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot. Originally planned for an interview with Time Extension to discuss his thoughts on the trailer, Jones had to postpone due to poor health.

As a devoted gamer, I was taken aback by the unexpected news about Brett Jones’ passing. His exceptional skills in gaming have been a source of enjoyment for me and many others since the early ’90s. Despite this unfortunate event, representatives from Atkins Gallery have assured us that the exhibition will carry on as planned. For those who wish to support Brett’s family during these difficult times, you can make a donation towards his £2,500 crowdfunding target on the JustGiving website.
