I was so touched to hear about this amazing grandma! She’s 81 years old and is actually using Minecraft to help raise money for her grandson’s cancer treatment. It’s incredible to think about how huge Minecraft has become since it came out in 2011 – it’s seriously the best-selling video game ever, with over 350 million copies sold! It’s become a whole franchise now, with tons of spin-off games and even a movie coming out called A Minecraft Movie. It’s heartwarming to see the game being used for such a good cause.
I gotta say, Minecraft really blew up thanks to sites like YouTube and Twitch. It’s crazy to think the game has over a trillion views on YouTube alone! Even after all these years – over a decade and a half – people are still watching it like crazy. But it’s not just about gaming, either. I’ve seen Minecraft used in schools to teach stuff like chemistry, computer science, and even how to design things with computers, which is pretty awesome.
17-Year-Old Grandson Cancer-Free Thanks to Grandma’s Minecraft YouTube Videos
Sue Jacquot, an 81-year-old woman, recently started a YouTube channel called GrammaCrackers where she shares her Minecraft gameplay. She began posting videos on October 22, 2025, hoping to connect with and support her 17-year-old grandson, Jack Self. Although she hadn’t considered herself a gamer before, Sue learned to play Minecraft as a way to bond with Jack and his brother, Austin. She launched her channel just months after picking up the game, motivated by Jack’s diagnosis of sarcoma in 2024 and his subsequent treatment of over 200 chemotherapy rounds.
GrammaCrackers’ first Minecraft video, “The BEST START EVER – Part 1,” quickly became popular, earning over 644,000 views in three months. She’s now gained over 237,000 subscribers. In each video, she includes a link to her son Jack’s GoFundMe page to help with his cancer treatment. As of now, the page has raised over $44,000 towards a $100,000 goal, not including any money she earns from her YouTube channel. Recently, Jack shared the wonderful news with ABC 15 that he is now cancer-free and recovering well.
Image via Mojang Jacquot’s story with Minecraft is incredibly heartwarming and shows how games can connect people. An 81-year-old grandmother, new to gaming, used Minecraft to bond with her grandchildren and support them through a difficult period. It’s a great example of how video games can be enjoyed by anyone, and how they’ve become much more than just a simple pastime.
The story of Self and Jacquot, and the popularity of their YouTube videos, highlights the strong and caring community that has formed around Minecraft, and how players can unite to support one another. In a matter of months, Minecraft fans rallied around a family facing hardship, transforming a scary situation into a heartwarming story. This is further proof of the lasting impact Minecraft continues to have, even after 15 years.
