Okay, so in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, these ‘Shifting Earth’ events are wild! One minute you’re riding through a normal area, and the next a whole mountain just appears, or a section of land gets totally transformed into a poisonous swamp. The new DLC, Forsaken Hollow, throws another one of these crazy events at you, and it’s definitely worth checking out!
The Great Hollow is a dramatic event that transforms the world of Limveld into a crystalline landscape filled with powerful enemies. A massive crystal dominates the center of this new land.
Here’s a guide to understanding the Shifting Earth event in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and how to make it through alive.
How to Unlock the Great Hollow Shifting Earth

The Great Hollow Shifting Earth is a feature added with the Nightreign DLC for Elden Ring. When you first start, you won’t be able to access it – it’s initially locked.
To participate in the Shifting Earth event, you’ll first need to own the Forsaken Hollow DLC, either by purchasing it separately or as part of the Elden Ring Nightreign Deluxe Edition. After downloading the DLC and defeating the Tricephalos boss, the event will become available.
Okay, so they’re adding the Great Hollow to the list of areas I can change up with the special shop outside of Roundtable Hold. Basically, I’ll have more control over which areas are affected by the Shifting Earth mechanic, which is awesome!
Great Hollow Key Map Locations
During your adventures in Great Hollow, there are a few important places you’ll want to check out, or at least try to reach. Here are some of them:
- Fortress in the bottom right is home to high-level enemies and multiple bosses, such as Godrick and the Gaping Dragon.
- Fortress in the upper left corner is home to various Omenkillers.
- Crystal Markers around the map show resonance crystals used to break the Crystal Curse.
- Large purple crystal near the center of the map becomes available after you break enough of the resonance crystals.
- Large stadium in the northern part of the map is used for different night two bosses.
- Teleporters on either side of the map are connected and are used for easy transportation.
- A world boss can typically be found in the crystals in the center of the map.
It’s best to save the fortresses until your second day, because they’re guarded by tougher enemies who can do a lot of damage. When you first enter the Great Hollow, focus on finding and defeating smaller, easier enemies to get stronger before tackling the more challenging ones.
How to Get the Great Hollow Shifting Earth Bonus
Like other Shifting Earth locations in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the Great Hollow offers a special reward. Collecting this reward gives you a permanent bonus that lasts throughout your playthrough, and it’s connected to a crystal found in the center of the area.
As you explore the Shifting Earth Event, you’ll find purple crystals around the map that you can interact with. Each time you touch one, you’ll hear a sound indicating the main crystal is cracking.
Once you’ve activated five crystals on the map, the central crystal will break, revealing a hidden reward. You’ll need to travel across the connecting horizontal crystals to reach it.
When you find the crystal, look for a bright light in the middle. Touching it will activate the Great Hollow Shifting Earth Bonus.
