People who love fantasy games and those who prefer action games often look for different things. Fantasy fans usually appreciate immersive worlds with detailed characters, beautiful scenery, and a sense of magic. Action fans, on the other hand, tend to prioritize fast-paced gameplay and exciting battles.
Lots of fantastic fantasy games exist, but do enough of them also deliver exciting, fast-paced action to please both fantasy and action game fans? Looking back at gaming over the years, let’s focus on the action – considering the fantasy elements just add to the experience. If the action is solid, these games should be a hit.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Synergize With Your Party
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth builds on the combat system of Final Fantasy 7 Remake with many new options. You’ll control a wider range of characters, and a new Synergy system lets two characters team up for powerful combo attacks – for example, Cloud can throw Tifa into the air for aerial strikes.
In addition to powerful team-up attacks, each character boasts a diverse range of skills for combat, and can learn magic by finding and unlocking Materia throughout the game. It’s easily one of the best action-based games in the entire Final Fantasy series.
God of War Ragnarök
Fly, My Mighty Axe!
The original God of War games were famous for their intense action, and the 2018 game took that even further with more impactful combat. As often happens with the first game in a new series, the reboot held back some ideas, but the fighting in the follow-up, God of War Ragnarok, was much more polished and refined.
God of War gives players access to a variety of weapons right from the beginning, and quickly switching between Kratos’s Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos is incredibly satisfying. While Kratos isn’t as quick and nimble as some action game heroes, this actually enhances the feeling of playing a powerful, brutal warrior.
Bloodborne
Transformative Weapons
FromSoftware’s series of challenging action games, often called “Soulslikes,” includes many standouts, but Bloodborne is a fan favorite for many. The game casts you as a Hunter in a dark, gothic world, where you’ll battle frightening creatures and explore an interconnected map that gradually expands as you play.
The combat feels more fast-paced than in Dark Souls. Instead of blocking with shields or rolling away, you’ll be dodging and attacking. But the coolest feature is definitely the weapons – they can all change form mid-battle, like a cane turning into a whip! Bloodborne has tons of these transforming weapons, and it’s incredibly satisfying.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Become The Best
Monster Hunter Wilds, the newest game in the Monster Hunter series, features weapons that can change form. The Charge Blade is a good example: it starts as a sword and shield, but can combine into a massive axe with a spinning, saw-like shield attachment.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, players can become proficient with fourteen different weapon types, and even create many more variations within each style. By hunting and defeating giant monsters and gathering their resources, you’ll constantly be engaged in thrilling action, whether you’re playing solo or with friends online.
Diablo 4
Evil Dies Easily
Diablo 4 doesn’t reinvent the Diablo formula, but it’s a remarkably polished experience. Whether you prefer close-combat classes like the Barbarian or long-range characters like the Sorcerer, you’re sure to enjoy playing.
Stringing skills together to create combos is incredibly satisfying, especially when you’re facing a horde of enemies. Playing with others online makes it even better, and while the game’s world is dark and desolate, the new open-world design enhances this action-packed dark fantasy experience.
Hades 2
Witchy Vibes
Hades 2 is a roguelike game where you play as Melinoë, a witch learning her craft. Before each attempt, you can choose different weapons, and each weapon has basic attacks. As you play, you’ll earn Boons from the gods, which can power up those attacks and make them even stronger.
Whether fighting through hordes of enemies in the underworld or climbing Mount Olympus, players can unleash powerful attacks like tidal waves, light beams, and strong gusts of wind. While not as visually stunning as some 3D action games, Hades 2 promises to be incredibly impressive.
Okami
Japanese Folklore Brought To Life
Okami is a beloved PlayStation 2 game that has been updated and improved over the years, and it remains excellent. Set in a beautiful, fantastical version of Japan, you play as Amaterasu, the sun goddess, who appears as a wolf. Her mission is to save other animal gods and bring life back to the land.
Combat begins when players attack a demon seal, either in the open world or within a dungeon, which transports them to a special battle arena. During fights, players can use both traditional attacks and unique abilities, like quickly pausing the game to paint powerful bombs with Amaterasu’s brush. Solving puzzles using the celestial brush is also a key element of gameplay.
Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning
Fluid Fantasy
Many gamers have forgotten about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning since its 2012 release, as it didn’t make a huge splash initially. But those who have played it generally agree that its combat system is a standout feature, even compared to other fantasy RPGs from that era.
You’re not locked into a single character class in this game; instead, you customize your abilities by choosing perks across different skill trees as you gain experience. The game features a diverse range of weapons, including chakrams and long swords. Combat is exciting thanks to a blend of magical and physical attacks, and it’s a system more Western RPGs should take note of, much like the one found in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
