By 2015, the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U had been out for a few years. While some performed better than others, it was a solid year for gaming consoles. It doesn’t feel like it, but ten years have flown by, and we’re now playing on a whole new generation of consoles.
Over the past ten years, a fantastic collection of RPGs have emerged on various gaming consoles, truly defining the decade with their creative gameplay and compelling stories. Many are considered among the best RPGs of the last twenty years and are likely to remain popular for a long time. These games offer everything players want: immersive stories, engaging combat, and complex quests. If you’re an RPG fan, these are the titles you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Third Times The Charm
Fans of the original *Baldur’s Gate* would likely have enjoyed a game similar to *Pillars of Eternity*. While that’s a solid game, it felt limited by a budget and design approach reminiscent of PC RPGs like *Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn* from the year 2000.
Fans were truly surprised by *Baldur’s Gate 3*. It features a captivating story with many different ways to play, characters you’ll quickly care about, and challenging gameplay that lets you creatively solve problems and interact with the world, whether you’re in a fight or not. After a long wait, the game delivers, and it’s one of the most detailed and immersive *Dungeons & Dragons* experiences ever created.
Undertale
Celebrating Exactly Ten Years Of Subversion
In 2025, the RPG *Undertale* celebrated its tenth anniversary and continues to be fondly remembered. What made it special was its unique approach to the genre – players were encouraged to talk to monsters instead of battling them, and these conversations could drastically change the course of the story.
Undertale stands out from other role-playing games thanks to its memorable music, quirky characters, and unique way of playing. Even more impressively, the game was mostly created by just one person, Toby Fox, who has since become a well-known figure in the independent game development world.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Ten Years Already?
It’s amazing to think that *The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt* came out a decade ago. It still feels modern and popular, with a strong community and gamers consistently pointing to it as one of the biggest and most detailed open-world games available.
This RPG is considered one of the best ever made, offering a complete and satisfying experience. Quests are captivating and have meaningful results, while the combat is exciting, with impactful sword fighting and magic. The story itself is also compelling. The game world is massive, offering players potentially hundreds of hours of exploration, and every area feels purposeful and worthwhile.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
The First FRPG
Despite appearing and feeling like a major, big-budget game,
This game tells a powerful and emotional story about loss and betrayal, but it’s also surprisingly funny at times. The combat is really interesting thanks to its innovative counter system, and it cleverly reintroduces world maps without making the game an open-world experience. Plus, the final level is truly unforgettable – it’s one of the best in gaming and will stay with you long after you finish playing.
Diablo 4
Get The Party Started
It’s great when a multiplayer RPG really shines, and Diablo 4 definitely fits the bill. Released in 2023, Blizzard continues to add new content with each season, ensuring players remain engaged and return for more adventures.
Whether you prefer playing solo or with friends, this action RPG offers incredibly detailed character customization thanks to its extensive skill tree – it’s one of the most robust in the genre, even compared to other *Diablo* games, encouraging you to experiment with different classes and start over again. The game also breaks new ground for the series with its open-world design, and boasts the strongest story in years, centered around the compelling villain Lilith.
Persona 5
Live Your Best High School Life
It’s been quite a while since a brand new *Persona* game was released. *Persona 5* came out in North America in 2017 and has remained popular ever since. Atlus, the game’s developer, has released several spin-off games and other titles, some of which fit into the *Persona* storyline and some that don’t, to keep fans engaged.
Persona 5 was a huge success for the series, and for good reason. It featured a compelling story centered around overcoming challenges in unique worlds, combined with beautiful, easy-to-navigate menus, memorable characters, and an incredible jazz-infused soundtrack. Its overall stylish presentation remains unmatched in the turn-based RPG genre.
Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
The Hawaiian Adventure
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the first main game in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series to take place entirely in the United States, specifically Hawaii. While long-time fans will especially enjoy the story, the game is also accessible to newcomers thanks to helpful explanations of the series’ background.
New players should know this game is about reformed criminals fighting actual bad guys in Hawaii, all through strategic turn-based battles. It’s a crazy, over-the-top experience that’s hard to stop playing, especially with its unique character class system and tons of fun side missions.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
A Return To Form
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is arguably the best Final Fantasy game in over twenty years, since the PlayStation 2 days. It successfully recaptures the magic that fans have always loved about the series, and even though it’s a remake, it didn’t take any shortcuts to achieve that.
Rather than changing course, Square Enix built upon the exciting combat system of *Final Fantasy 7 Remake*, filling the open world with fun side quests and mini-games that fans will love. Now, it’s worth wondering if the last game in this *Final Fantasy* remake series will have a spectacular finale, or if *Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth* will be the peak of the trilogy, similar to how *The Empire Strikes Back* stands out in the *Star Wars* saga.
Dragon Quest 11: Echoes Of An Elusive Age
A Blast From The Past
Okay, so I just finished *Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age*, and honestly, Square Enix has done it again! It’s another fantastic game from one of their classic JRPG series – seriously, they just keep knocking it out of the park.
When it came out in North America in 2018, this game felt like a cozy and familiar RPG. While it doesn’t really try to do anything new with the series, it’s a well-made turn-based RPG with a long story and a distinctive art style. For many *Dragon Quest* fans, that’s enough to make it enjoyable.
Sea Of Stars
Reliving The Golden Age
Sea of Stars is a new indie game that lovingly draws inspiration from classic titles. Sabotage Studio, the developers, built the game around the engaging turn-based combat of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and the expansive world map style of Chrono Trigger, and the result is fantastic.
Similar to *Chrono Trigger*, *Sea of Stars* lets all characters team up for special combo attacks, making the battles more exciting. Its beautiful, retro-style pixel art would have made it a standout game on the SNES, and it remains a fantastic RPG even now.
