GTA 5 Loses 40% of Its Players on PC Due to Anti-Cheat Implementation

As a long-time GTA enthusiast who’s spent countless hours customizing my virtual life in San Andreas, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the recent developments with GTA 5 on PC. The implementation of BattlEye has undeniably affected the community, and not in a good way. The drop from 140,000 to 84,000 concurrent players is like watching a sunset over Los Santos – beautiful, but fleeting.

After implementing BattlEye in GTA 5 for PC, the number of simultaneous players on Steam has decreased from a steady 140,000 to approximately 84,000 as of now, representing a 40% decrease.

The drop in players isn’t because the game had many hackers, but because many of the game’s mods are no longer usable. In fact, according to some social media accounts, hackers have already been able to bypass BattlEye, which is considered a reasonably weak anti-cheat in the grand scheme of things.

As an ardent enthusiast, I can’t help but share some troubling news about one of our beloved free mod tools, Kiddions. Straight from their Discord channel, they’ve announced that all their mods and mod menus are no longer compatible with GTA Online. The future of this tool, they say, is shrouded in uncertainty.

The issue for Rockstar Games here is that 9 years is a lifetime when it comes to most games, and without an anti-cheat, the game has established itself with modding communities worldwide. When new players come to the game, they know what they are walking into, and for some, the core experience that Rockstar Games offers isn’t why they play; it’s the mods.

Rockstar Games confirmed they would no longer provide support for the game on Steam Deck or Linux systems, a decision likely contributing to the decline in player numbers.

It’s uncertain at this point whether Rockstar Games will reverse their decision or not, but for now, it seems that the number of players for GTA 5 on PC may keep decreasing.
