As a long-time gamer and avid follower of the gaming industry, I can’t help but be concerned about the growing trend of review bombing and its impact on developers and publishers. For years, I’ve seen how a vocal minority can sway public opinion against a game or franchise with negative reviews, often for reasons that have little to do with the actual quality of the product.
For decades, gaming enthusiasts have expressed their grievances and views towards specific games and their creators online. It’s well-known that a large group of disgruntled gamers can significantly impact a game’s reputation by intensely criticizing it, a phenomenon referred to as “review bombing.” This can be triggered by various reasons such as an unpopular update or a breached promise from the developer. The practice of review bombing has become increasingly prevalent in today’s gaming community.
In a recent SEC filing, Take-Two Interactive, which is the parent company of Rockstar Games and the publisher of the Grand Theft Auto series, openly discussed the negative impact of review bombing on businesses or franchises.
‘Defamation Campaigns’
In their latest annual report filing, Take-Two Interactive’s management team warned about the serious issue of review bombing. To put it more delicately, they referred to this phenomenon as “defamation campaigns.”
Lately, some developers have faced intense pressure from review-bombing campaigns. A notable instance is Helldivers 2, which was heavily criticized this year through an influx of negative reviews. However, it’s important to note that the game’s issues were addressed when developers reversed changes that sparked community backlash, based on the massive number of deliberately poor reviews received by Helldivers 2.
According to a recent SEC filing disclosed by Stephen Totilo of GameFile, this is how Take-Two’s executive team phrased it: [[Company Name]]’s senior management expressed the following in our latest SEC document.
From my personal experience as a gaming company, I cannot stress enough the significance of maintaining excellent ratings on third-party platforms. These ratings serve as beacons that guide players to discover our games. When our ratings take a hit due to negative reviews or a decline in numbers, it becomes more challenging for new players to find and recommend our games. This can lead to a loss of potential customers and revenues, which is detrimental to any business.
Before Grand Theft Auto 6 hits the market, Take-Two Interactive might be gearing up to defend against potential backlash from shareholders regarding Rockstar Games’ latest creation. This could be due to various reasons such as controversy over the game’s content being perceived as too politically correct or lacking desirable networking features and in-game mechanics for certain players. Developers often face pressure to please diverse audiences, making their jobs quite challenging.
