Summary
- Gundam franchise spans over 30 series, exploring war’s effects.
- Intriguing Gundam villains blur lines between right and wrong.
- Characters like Char Aznable and Gihren Zabi drive conflict.
The Gundam universe, born from the creative genius of Yoshiyuki Tomino with the initial anime, “Mobile Suit Gundam”, has been around for more than half a century. The original series gave birth to numerous universes, each delving into distinct periods of conflict and its impact on individuals. With over thirty series spread across various timelines, Gundam stands as the most successful mecha franchise ever, alongside Transformers, in the annals of animation history.
Gundam narrates tales centered on devastating wars featuring colossal war machines known as Mobile Suits. Characters on both sides are driven to extremes until a hero emerges, seeking to restore peace through either kindness or strength. The antagonists in these sagas are meticulously designed, exuding captivating charm as they strive for total conquest. The writing of numerous Gundam series often makes it difficult to distinguish between good and evil due to the compelling portrayal of the villains.
8. Kyoji Kasshu/ Dark Gundam
A Puppet And Its Master
In the anime titled “Mobile Fighter G Gundam,” Kyoji serves as the sibling of the central character, Domon Kashu. Throughout the show, it’s Domon’s mission to locate his brother, who has made off with a cutting-edge Gundam during the Gundam Fight competition.
Instead, Kyoji became contaminated by the artificial intelligence within the Dark Gundam, drawing power from it. The AI of the Dark Gundam aimed to preserve Earth by annihilating all human existence, employing its Dark Gundam cells to control organic beings as puppets. Among the villains in the Gundam universe, the Dark Gundam stands out as one of the few non-human entities and one of the most fearsome.
7. Zechs Marquise
The Masked Strategist
For the first time, Zechs made an appearance in the highly acclaimed Gundam series, “Mobile Suit Gundam Wing,” particularly popular in the Western world. Initially, he functioned as a tool for the OZ corporation and had his first confrontation with the Wing Gundam controlled by Heero Yuy during Operation Meteor.
Throughout the series, Zechs consistently poses a challenge for every Gundam pilot due to his exceptional tactical acumen and flawless piloting abilities. Although Zechs functioned as a means for cooperation, he was an exceptionally effective tool, exhibiting a ruthless and methodical demeanor while carrying out his role as a formidable antagonist.
6. Prospera Mercury
Burning The Entire Universe For The Sake Of Love
In “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury,” the narrative started off as a relatively cheerful tale compared to many other Gundam series. Yet, as events unfolded and the entire scenario came into focus, it transformed into a heartrending saga of prejudice, sorrow, and avarice.
In the production, Prospera Mercury embodied the character of the mysterious figure in a mask, hinting at her influence behind the curtains. It emerged that her ambition was to construct an artificial intelligence derived from her late daughter’s consciousness, aiming to establish a realm where AIs could exist as equals. However, controversy arose when it was disclosed that Prospera intended to assert control over Earth by harnessing a data storm, which would inadvertently grant her absolute rule and enforce global tranquility.
5. Rau Le Creuset
A Force Of Nature Without A Past
In the captivating world of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, I step into the enigmatic role of the masked figure known as Rau Le Creuset – the series’ relentless antagonist. Born as Rau La Flaga, I’m a genetic clone of Mu La Flaga’s father, intended to supersede him due to his father’s arrogant superiority complex. However, fate had other plans for me; I was deemed flawed and discarded, igniting within me an unquenchable rage that fueled my desire to annihilate humanity entirely.
In my perspective, Rau showcased an impressive military prowess that propelled him swiftly within the ZAFT organization. His ambition, however chilling, was to orchestrate a plan utilizing nuclear armaments with the ultimate goal of eradicating all life forms. This radical action, as he saw it, would put an end to the endless conflicts plaguing existence and establish an eternal cosmic peace.
4. Gihren Zabi
A Charismatic Warmonger And Enemy Of Peace
In this scenario, if Char Aznable symbolizes the mighty blade of the Zeon Principality, then Gihren Zabi functioned as its shrewd strategist. As the eldest among the Zabi siblings, Gihren was not only intellectually astute but also possessed remarkable physical prowess.
Gihren skillfully ignited the emotions of the people in Zeon, rallying them to his side and amassing immense power as both Commander-in-Chief and Supreme Leader. His achievements were rivaled only by his insatiable hunger for power and excessive self-confidence. It was likely Gihren who instigated the conflict between Earth Forces and Zeon, but his motives ran deeper, revealing a sinister intent: he aimed to provoke total war among all factions.
3. Full Frontal
The Reincarnation Of The Red Comet
In the captivating world of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, I found myself drawn into the enigma that was Full Frontal – the series’ formidable adversary and the charismatic leader of Neo Zeon. Initially, he was a shadowy figure, cloaked in mystery, rallying Neo Zeon towards triumph.
In simpler terms, Full Frontal was an upgraded version of Char Aznable, engineered both mechanically and genetically to be flawless. On the battlefield, he outperformed all others and came very close to achieving his goal of shifting economic control for his people’s benefit. However, destiny had other plans, leading him to overcome his despair.
2. Haman Karn
The Youthful Prodigy Of Ne Zeon
At just sixteen years old, Haman Karn ascended to the supreme leadership of the Axis Forces following her father’s demise. Desiring to restore the Zabi family to its previous eminence, she initiated a war against the Earth Forces, aiming to rule over the colonies and Earth, with herself seated at the head of the table.
Haman Karn was an exceptionally cunning politician who masterfully manipulated the desires and aspirations of her constituents as a strategic tool. To Karn, no undertaking was beyond human decency if it promised triumph for herself and her people. Her relentless ambition and unyielding ruthlessness ultimately led to her downfall.
1. Char Aznable
The Red Comet And Savoir Of Zeon
It’s possible to make a case that Char Aznable is not just a typical villain, but rather a crucial element shaping the Gundam universe, and neither wholly good nor evil. Nevertheless, Char played a pivotal role in the struggle between Earth and Zeon, often portrayed as an adversary in the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime, especially within the Universal Century storyline.
In an effort to propel humanity towards the development of advanced thinking beings known as Newtypes, Char aimed to abandon Earth and spearhead our journey among the stars. To realize this vision, Char undertook unimaginable actions and orchestrated a near-nuclear catastrophe, with the ultimate goal of accelerating our evolution.
