Hacker Group Has Reportedly Struck Nintendo

Nintendo appears to have suffered a significant data breach. A well-known hacker group claims to have stolen over 570 GB of company information, including internal assets, early looks at upcoming games, and financial details. So far, there’s no evidence that players’ personal data was compromised.

Nintendo is having a strong year so far in 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 has quickly become popular, selling over 2.4 million units in the US in its first three months. Despite the success of the new console and well-received games like *Mario Kart World* and *Donkey Kong Bananza*, the year has also been marked by a significant cyberattack.

Nintendo Data Breach May Have Leaked 570 GB of Data

The hacker group Crimson Collective claims to have broken into Nintendo’s systems and stolen a large amount of unreleased data. While Nintendo hasn’t confirmed the breach, images circulating online appear to show numerous file folders containing game assets, production details, test data, and other sensitive information. The group hinted at possessing this data, suggesting they now have access to details about upcoming Nintendo games. Crimson Collective has previously claimed responsibility for hacking other companies, including Red Hat and Claro Colombia, and for briefly altering Nintendo’s website in September.

This recent security issue could be Nintendo’s biggest data breach in over five years. Back in April 2020, hackers accessed over 160,000 Nintendo accounts used for the eShop on Wii and 3DS. While passwords and payment details weren’t taken, the incident prompted Nintendo to improve its online security, including adding two-step verification.

A recent data breach at Game Freak led to the largest leak of *Pokémon* information in the history of the franchise. Although it happened in August 2024, Game Freak didn’t publicly acknowledge the hack until several months later. Nintendo and Game Freak, while distinct companies, collaborated to create the *Pokémon* games. Together with Creatures Inc., these three businesses jointly own The Pokémon Company, which handles the franchise’s marketing, publishing, and other related activities.
