Hades 2 Patch 1 is Fixing My Biggest Disappointment

This article contains minor spoilers for Hades 2‘s ending.

After leaving Early Access, I immediately jumped back into Hades 2 to experience Melinoe’s complete story. I loved everything about it – the fast-paced action, building different character setups, and the impressive portrayal of the gods. However, like many fans, I was a little disappointed with the game’s True Ending, especially considering how much I enjoyed the ending of the first Hades.

The ending of Hades 2 didn’t quite deliver the emotional impact I’d hoped for, leaving me feeling like something was missing after so many hours spent playing, even during its early access period. So, I was thrilled to see the preview for Supergiant Games’ Patch 1 on Steam. This isn’t just a simple update; it feels like a chance to truly complete the experience. In a game about repeated deaths, the ending needs to leave a lasting impression, and this patch might finally allow the conclusion to resonate and make sense. I’m eager to dive back in and face Time once more.

Hades 2 Patch 1 Preview Arrives for PC, Steam Deck, and Mac

I’m excited to share that the first preview of the Hades 2 Patch 1 is now available for those of us on PC and Mac! They don’t have a firm release date for the full patch yet, but we can try out the work-in-progress version now. It includes some bug fixes and adjustments that weren’t covered in the recent hotfixes, but the biggest improvements are really impressive.

  • Enhanced True Ending: Expanded events now lead into and follow the game’s True Ending. The update increases the required number of Underworld clears and revises several key moments before the end credits. However, most changes focus on Hades 2‘s Underworld route; the Surface path remains mostly untouched.
  • Replay Key Story Moments: A new Cauldron incantation allows players to revisit earlier parts of the story, including pivotal events like the True Ending sequence. This will come in handy for players who are looking to play through the events leading to Hades 2’s True Ending without starting all over.
  • Faster Prophecy Progression: Several character-related Fated Prophecies, including the one tied to the story epilogue, now unfold more quickly for smoother narrative pacing.
  • Crossroads Improvements: Decorative items at the Crossroads now cost fewer Kudos, and players will automatically receive refunds for any excess Kudos previously spent.

Other Boons and Tweaks from the Hades 2 Patch 1 Preview

The latest preview of Hades 2‘s Patch 1 shows off a bunch of helpful improvements and new things to do in the game. While this isn’t the finished patch, it already offers a lot for players. Here’s a look at what’s included so far:

  • New events and voice lines featuring prominent characters like Chronos, Zagreus, Hecate, Persephone, and more.
  • Increased overall damage and effectiveness for boons in Hades 2.
  • Over 30 listed bug fixes, excluding minor bugs.

Hades 2’s Ending Fell Flat, But Patch 1 May Help

I absolutely loved Hades 2. It felt like a rare, incredible experience, especially considering how good the first game was. I initially thought it was a strong contender for Game of the Year in 2025, and I still believe that, though with a little more caution now. That hesitation isn’t a criticism—it’s actually a testament to how amazing 2025 has been for games. We’ve seen so many unforgettable stories, like in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and exciting adventures, like Split Fiction. The fact that Hades 2 can compete with those games is truly impressive.

The ending of Hades 2 wasn’t a failure in the usual way—it wasn’t confusing or badly written. However, it felt surprisingly unsatisfying. The story, which started with such strong purpose and a sense of impending doom, ended quietly instead of with a powerful climax. For a game focused on repeated playthroughs, uncovering secrets, and finding emotional release, this lack of a strong conclusion left a lasting sense of emptiness.

“Don’t Worry, Zagreus Fixes It :)”

The game’s true ending feels surprisingly hurried, especially considering how well Hades usually builds emotional moments. After Chronos’s defeat, the story quickly wraps up, almost as if it’s afraid to take its time. The big threat that drove the entire plot suddenly becomes harmless, and we’re simply told Zagreus resolved everything. It feels abrupt to see the characters at peace and old conflicts resolved, all thanks to events that happen outside of what we see.

I generally dislike stories that rely on multiverse or time-travel solutions, and Hades 2 unfortunately reinforces that dislike. The ending feels unsatisfyingly simple – like it’s asking you not to question the logic too closely. This is especially disappointing considering the game revolves around repeated deaths and attempts, and important emotional moments happen in a part of the story you can’t directly experience.

The Absence of Tenderness

What bothers me most is the lack of emotional depth. I still get choked up remembering a moment in Hades when Zagreus meets his mother after reaching the surface. It was a quiet, genuinely touching scene that stood out against the game’s epic scale. The message – that even immortal beings can be deeply affected by family – really resonated with me.

When Hades 2 started hinting at a story about family, loss, and what we leave behind, I expected to feel deeply moved, like I did in the first game. But those emotional moments were surprisingly brief and subtle. A quick compliment from Persephone about Melinoe’s development felt like it should have been powerful, but it ended so quickly that I was left wondering if that was all there was to it.

Why Patch 1 Might Finally Fix Hades 2’s Ending

Let’s be real: a single update can’t completely fix the ending of Hades 2, but it’s a good first step. The improvements to the ‘True Ending’ will add new scenes both before and after the main events, potentially giving the story more room to develop. The fact that the game now requires more runs through the Underworld suggests the developers want players to earn a satisfying conclusion, rather than rushing into it.

Supergiant Games excels at creating emotional experiences – balancing action, humor, and heartfelt moments. If this update recaptures that skillful pacing, allowing Melinoe’s story to feel as impactful as Zagreus’, then Hades 2 might truly live up to the incredible legacy of the first Hades. And if it brings a tear to my eye? That’ll be proof they’ve nailed it.
