As a longtime fan of the roguelike genre and a dedicated player of Hades since its initial release, I’ve grown fond of Supergiant Games’ ability to craft immersive worlds filled with depth and challenge. With Hades 2 now in early access, I can’t help but feel excited for what’s to come, especially when it comes to the new animal familiar system.

In May earlier this year, the long-awaited early access release of Hades 2 was met with enthusiasm from fans of the first game. This new installment not only maintains the core elements that made the original a hit but also introduces several significant and captivating enhancements. Despite being technically incomplete, Hades 2 already stands out as a worthy successor to its predecessor.

As a gamer excitedly anticipating the full release of “Hades 2,” I can’t help but be impressed by the substantial content currently available. Developer Supergiant Games is clearly committed to enriching the game with additional features, mechanics, and narrative elements through regular updates leading up to version 1.0. With an incomplete ending and numerous opportunities for improvement, it’s clear that “Hades 2” will undergo significant changes throughout 2024 and into early 2025. One particularly intriguing aspect that I believe Supergiant may focus on is the animal familiar system – a delightful addition to the game with immense potential for growth and expansion.

Hades 2’s Animal Familiars Should Be Built Upon Ahead of Its Full Launch

Animal Familiars Are Among Hades 2’s Best New Features

When I write this, Hades 2 lets me bring along two adorable animal companions: a frog named Frinos and a feline friend called Toula. By performing the Faith of Familiar Spirits ritual at the Cauldron in the Crossroads, Melinoe grants them the Witch’s Delight treat, making them eager to fight by my side. Each of these companions comes with exclusive passive bonuses and special abilities that add a unique edge to my gameplay.

Frinos Toula
Increases Melinoe’s max health Adds one Death Defiance
Increases Lost Soul spawn rate Increases fishing spot spawn rate
Occasionally hops on enemies, dealing damage Occasionally claws enemies, dealing damage

In Hades 2, these benefits can be enhanced by bestowing extra Witch’s Delight resources as gifts, adding depth to the game’s intricate advancement structure. For players aiming to maximize their power in Hades 2, familiars offer a distinctive resource consumption method that deviates from the standard weapon or ability enhancements inherited from the original game. These adorable animal companions are an engaging and enjoyable feature in Hades, but they have great potential for expansion.

How Supergiant Can Expand the Animal Familiar System

An effective way to enhance the well-known mechanic is by introducing more animal companions. Although Frinos and Toula are adorable and productive, they lack diversity on their own. This becomes evident once players have fully upgraded them, which happens quickly since each passive benefit or perk can only be enhanced twice. As Hades 2 continues expanding before its complete release, more animal companions would bring more flexibility to gameplay and enticing new paths for advancement. Furthermore, adding extra advantages for every companion and expanding their upgrade capabilities would allow the system to shine even more brilliantly.

Instead of potentially pushing the boundaries too far in “Hades 2,” Supergiant might explore the mythological background further for new creatures. Mythical beings such as griffins, chimeras, and pegasuses are more fantastical compared to the existing frog and cat, but they could add depth and accuracy to the game’s lore. However, implementing these creatures may bring challenges in maintaining balance within the game, and they might overshadow Toula and Frinos. Nevertheless, this is a possibility worth considering.

The unique meta progression systems in “Hades 2” set it apart from its earlier versions. With each new resource or enhancement, players experience significant advancements or a creative twist on Melinoe’s character builds. Animal familiars are excellent examples of this interconnected progression design. Supergiant Games should consider expanding upon these companions to maximize their potential impact.
