Hades 2 builds on everything that made the first game so great, offering players an even richer experience. Like Zagreus before her, the new protagonist, Melinoë, is a compelling and well-developed character. Both Zagreus and Melinoë are complex individuals with personal stories that are just as engaging as their adventures in the Underworld, making players truly invested in their journeys.
Hades’ daughter and son appear very different at first. However, despite their contrasting personalities, they actually share some similarities. This balance helps the new game feel both fresh and familiar, and it creates a believable sibling dynamic between Melinoë and Zagreus, even though they haven’t had a chance to meet.
He’s Fighting His Way Out; She’s Fighting Her Way In
Opposing Journeys Through Hell
Hades 2 reverses the story from the first game. Instead of trying to escape the Underworld, the new hero, Melinoë, is venturing deeper into it, aiming to reach her enemy in the depths of Tartarus and Hades’ palace. Even when she travels to Mount Olympus, she’s still focused on breaking through barriers to get *in*, rather than out.
Zag is on a quest to break free, while Mel is focused on getting in. Zag has always been confined to the House of Hades, longing to experience the world beyond, and Mel has been living in exile, unfairly banished from her home. Both are driven to get back something they lost through no fault of their own, but they’re heading in opposite directions within the Underworld to achieve their goals.
They’re Both Fighting For Family
Familial Bonds Are A Series Theme
Zagreus wants to find his mother, Persephone, and build relationships with his family on Olympus, escaping his controlling father. Meanwhile, Melinoë is determined to liberate her family from the oppressive rule of Chronos. Both Zagreus and Melinoë share a common longing: to connect with family members they’ve never had the chance to know.
Ultimately, both characters face the one responsible for tearing their families apart. While the reasons differ – Hades tried to avoid war by keeping Zagreus from Persephone, and Chronos started a war that separated Melinoë from her family – both must overcome huge challenges to reconnect with loved ones and build the family bonds they were denied.
Duty Versus Rebellion
Their Biggest Motivations Are Opposites
As a fan, it’s fascinating to see how different Hades’ kids are! Zagreus seems determined to break free from the fate everyone expects for him, but his sister, Melinoë, totally embraces hers. He’s all about escaping what he’s *supposed* to do, and she’s focused on fulfilling it. It really highlights their contrasting personalities and motivations.
Zagreus grew up in the House of Hades, but he never felt a strong connection to it because his father was distant and aloof. Unlike him, Melinoë has been prepared since childhood for her duties, ever since Hecate saved her from Chronos’ attack on Hades. Those around Zagreus have grown accustomed to his wandering spirit and don’t expect much from him, which he doesn’t mind. But Melinoë’s fellow travelers at the Crossroads have high hopes for her, and she’s determined to meet them.
They Both Wear Their Hearts On Their Sleeve
Neither One Minces Words
Zagreus quickly won over fans with his sarcastic wit, which perfectly complements his determined and rebellious personality. He’s not afraid to playfully tease or verbally challenge his rivals, particularly the boastful Theseus. However, his honesty isn’t reserved for enemies – he’s equally direct with his friends and those he cares about. Zagreus is open and honest about his feelings for Meg, Than, and Dusa, and he’s willing to tell his friends what they need to hear, even if it’s difficult.
Though perhaps a little quieter than her brother, Melinoë isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She readily confronts her enemies and isn’t shy about expressing affection to her friends – she’ll happily tell Icarus she misses him, or give Eris her honest opinion. While she doesn’t display her sass as openly as Zag, she has a subtle, dry wit. When Scylla asks for Melinoë’s opinion on a new song, claiming she values fan feedback, Melinoë playfully suggests Scylla ask the fans directly.
Drastically Different Upbringings
Contrasting Expectations
Zagreus was raised in the House of Hades by a cold and distant father, always feeling like an outsider and simply “the boss’s son.” Hades never bothered to teach him any responsibilities, leading Zagreus to reject his expected role. He found support and guidance from Nyx, who he believed was his mother, and from Achilles, both of whom believed in his potential. However, Hades seemed to doubt Zagreus from the beginning, and this low expectation was shared by many others within the House of Hades.
Unlike others, Melinoë grew up with everyone believing in her potential. From the start, Hecate trained her for a specific, important mission. She received guidance from powerful figures like Selene, Artemis, Medea, and Circe, all of whom were confident in her ability to overcome Chronos. While some, like Nemesis, had their doubts, most around her expected great things from her.
They Both Have A Hidden Soft Side
Kindness Beneath The Surface
Zagreus is the impulsive, defiant son of the God of the Dead, while Melinoë is a focused and determined princess who was exiled from her home. Both characters initially seem a bit hardened, but players will discover a more vulnerable side to each of them as they learn their stories.
As Zagreus travels through the Underworld, he meets many people and quickly wants to help them with their problems. He tries to free Sisyphus, reunite Orpheus and Eurydice, and bring Achilles and Patroclus together. While this is also a way to defy his father, Zagreus is primarily motivated by kindness and a genuine desire to help those he cares about.
Melinoë is driven to help others. She clearly loves animals, as seen in how she treats her magical companions and even the fearsome Cerberus. She envisions the Crossroads as a sanctuary for those in need, offering it as a safe place for Icarus and Moros. Like their father, Hades, her children are strong-willed and honest, but they’ve also inherited a crucial quality from their mother, Persephone: a genuine kindness and empathy for others.
