Halo 1 Remake is Official and Coming to PS5, But Without Its Defining Feature

Microsoft has announced that a remake of the original Halo game, titled Halo: Campaign Evolved, is currently being developed and will be released on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, in 2026. This marks the first time a Halo game will be available on PlayStation. However, the remake will focus solely on the single-player campaign and cooperative play with up to four players; traditional online player-versus-player (PvP) multiplayer will not be included.

The highly anticipated relaunch of Halo: Combat Evolved is planned for 2026, perfectly timed with the franchise’s 25th anniversary. First released in 2001 as a flagship title for the original Xbox, Halo: Combat Evolved marked Microsoft’s entrance into the world of console gaming. Even before the introduction of Xbox Live, the game was celebrated for its fun local multiplayer mode, made possible by the original Xbox’s System Link feature. An updated Anniversary edition of Halo: Combat Evolved was released in 2011 and is now included in Halo: The Master Chief Collection for PC and Xbox.

Halo: Campaign Evolved Won’t Include PVP Maps

Okay, so at the Halo World Championships in Seattle on October 24th, Halo Studios finally showed off the remake of the original Halo game! It’s called Halo: Combat Evolved, and it’s coming sometime in 2026 for PC, Xbox, and – get this – even PS5! That’s the first time a Halo game will be on PlayStation in over twenty years, which is wild. Now, don’t expect to jump into online PvP matches with this one. Instead, they’re focusing on co-op. You’ll be able to play the campaign with a friend via split-screen, but that’s only on consoles. The good news is there will be a four-player online co-op campaign, and it’ll support cross-play, meaning we can all play together and even share our progress whether we’re on PC or console!

As a huge Halo fan, I was so excited to hear that Halo Studios is bringing the remakes to PlayStation alongside Xbox and PC – that’s awesome news! It sounds like they’re really opening up the franchise. And get this: the remake of Campaign Evolved isn’t just a straight retelling of the story. They’re adding three brand new prequel chapters starring Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson, which I can’t wait to play! If you’re at the Halo World Championship, you can even try out a demo of the fourth level, ‘The Silent Cartographer,’ right now!

When it launches, Halo: Combat Evolved will become one of several Xbox games – like Age of Empires 4 – available to PlayStation players, bridging the gap between the two platforms. It remains to be seen if and when other Halo games will also become cross-platform.
