One of the developers behind the remake of Halo: Combat Evolved explained why it won’t have traditional player-versus-player (PVP) multiplayer. Although you can still play the campaign with up to four players in co-op, the usual multiplayer modes aren’t included in this version.
When I first heard about the Halo: Combat Evolved remake, I was honestly surprised it didn’t include multiplayer. Now, multiplayer is huge for Halo – it’s a core part of what makes the games so great. So, launching a game without it just feels…off. It’s funny though, because the original Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox had LAN parties, but this remake doesn’t even have that option. It’s a pretty big difference!
Why Doesn’t Halo: Campaign Evolved Have Multiplayer?
Damon Conn, the executive producer, explained to Windows Central why the remake of Halo: Combat Evolved is prioritizing the campaign mode, especially given the popularity of multiplayer games. He said they aren’t trying to improve upon what is already a classic, but rather create something that exists alongside the original, utilizing modern technology and a new approach while still respecting the game’s history. Conn also emphasized the importance of features like crossplay, cross-progression, and four-player online co-op.
Conn explained that while the new release offers a campaign experience, it’s designed to be more than just a solo adventure. Halo has always been about bringing players together, fostering a strong community, and sharing stories. They believe this release will do just that. Even though Halo is coming to PlayStation for the first time, the developers are confident they can still create the strong sense of community the series is known for. That approach makes a lot of sense.
Even though the remake of Halo: Combat Evolved won’t have multiplayer, there’s still a lot to learn about what the single-player campaign will offer. Some changes, like the addition of sprinting, have already sparked debate. However, most reactions to the remake have been positive, thanks to the impressive visual upgrade provided by Unreal Engine 5, which goes far beyond a simple visual update to the original 2001 game.
