Halo Infinite Prequel Game: A Gears of War: E-Day Inspired Spin-Off?

It’s being whispered around that Halo Studios might be developing not just a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, but also what fans are calling Halo 7, which is believed to be a sequel to Halo Infinite. However, these projects have yet to be officially unveiled or acknowledged. Yet, given the approaching 25th anniversary of the Halo franchise, it’s widely assumed that Halo Studios intends to create more Halo games.

Although Halo Studios might have concluded their work on Halo Infinite for now, they still have the opportunity to expand upon its foundation and create additional games and narratives similar to The Coalition’s upcoming prequel, Gears of War: E-Day. This game aims to delve into a notable period in the history of Gears, marking the first time it is depicted in a video game format. In the same vein, Halo Studios could develop a prequel for Halo Infinite set during Master Chief’s six-month absence prior to his rescue by Echo-216.

Events Following Halo Infinite’s Prologue Explained

In the opening scene of Halo Infinite, the UNSC Infinity is attacked and invaded by the Banished near Zeta Halo. Master Chief is hurled into space by Atriox, the leader of the Banished. After Master Chief’s downfall, Atriox heads to Zeta Halo and clashes with Cortana. In a selfless act, Cortana destroys the Silent Auditorium of the ring, shattering its surface, triggering an emergency slipspace jump that propels the installation, along with its orbiting debris and ships, to an undisclosed location. For the subsequent six months, survivors from the UNSC Infinity fight for survival and regroup on the ring as the Banished reinforce their stronghold on the installation. Numerous incidents during this period are recounted in the various audio logs found in Halo Infinite.

The history of Zeta Halo during a six-month period is mostly understood through the audio logs in Halo Infinite and the novel, Halo: The Rubicon Protocol. Despite numerous UNSC survivors meeting gruesome fates at the hands of the Banished – being killed, tortured, or even eaten – some Spartan-IVs persisted in forming an alliance to resist the Banished as long as possible, awaiting reinforcements and causing damage to their development projects. This resistance movement was headed by Spartan Hudson Griffin from Fireteam Taurus who set up a refuge for survivors within the debris of the UNSC Mortal Reverie. Although this coalition carried out several guerrilla missions against the Banished successfully, it disintegrated following an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate War Chief Escharum which resulted in Griffin’s capture and most of the UNSC forces at Mortal Reverie being wiped out by Chieftain Tremonius.

The Status of UNSC Remnants on Zeta Halo and Beyond

After the collapse of Mortal Reverie, most surviving UNSC personnel and Spartans either perished or went into hiding across the rings. The active Spartans then activated the Rubicon Protocol, a plan aimed at halting Banished operations and safeguarding Earth above all else. Spartan-IVs Tomas Horvath, Nina Kovan, and some other survivors successfully transmitted a distress call to UNSC space with the aid of monitor 117649 Despondent Pyre before being transported to uncharted areas within the rings. It’s uncertain if the UNSC received Zeta Halo’s message, as they were preoccupied with a Banished assault on Earth and preventing both the Banished and Covenant remnants from gaining access to the Domain following Cortana’s demise, as depicted in the novel “Halo: Empty Throne.

The Potential of Multiple Halo Infinite Spin-Off Games

Although Halo Infinite didn’t get any additional campaign content as downloadable content (DLC), the creators at Halo Studios could develop prequel spin-off games that delve into intriguing events following the prologue of Infinite, offering compelling narratives and possibly setting up crucial events for Halo 7. The downfall of the UNSC Infinity and the enigma surrounding Zeta Halo are significant occurrences in the Halo universe worthy of further exploration beyond books and Halo Waypoint Chronicles. One imaginable spin-off game could feature players controlling Spartans Griffin, Horvath, and Kovan as they work together to rally UNSC survivors and fight off Banished forces led by the formidable Hand of Atriox. This approach would enable Halo Studios to make use of Infinite’s setting and mechanics while crafting a gritty underdog tale.

Instead, Halo Studios might choose to create a game centered around different segments of the Halo universe during Master Chief’s six-month absence following the prologue of Halo Infinite. One possibility is a game delving into Agent Locke’s situation during and post Operation: BREAKER TRIP, shedding light on how Hand of Atriox member Hyperius obtained his armor. Similarly, Halo Studios could develop a title following Shipmaster Rtas ‘Vadum and Spartan-II Jai-006’s battles against the Banished and Covenant remnants, mirroring the gameplay style of Halo 2. Another option is a prequel game concentrating on Captain Thomas Lasky and the UNSC Infinity’s whereabouts, both currently missing in action. All these events could serve as compelling standalone Halo games while also setting up the UNSC’s eventual victory on Zeta Halo alongside Master Chief in Halo 7.

Since the release of “Halo: Reach” in 2010, there haven’t been any mainline prequels to the Halo series, except for “Halo: Spartan Assault” in 2013 and “Halo: Fireteam Raven” in 2018.
