As a seasoned Halo gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that 343 Industries has certainly kept us on our toes with the latest developments in Halo Infinite. The introduction of the Endless is undoubtedly intriguing, but it’s also a double-edged sword.

The game Halo Infinite has made significant progress since its initial release. Following a string of updates and the reintroduction of beloved elements such as Forge and Campaign co-op, Halo Infinite has finally established a firm footing. Yet, developer 343 Industries finds itself in a tricky situation regarding the franchise’s narrative.

Ever since “Halo: Combat Evolved” ignited Microsoft’s enduring Halo series, the rich mythos of Halo has branched out to extensive realms. Beyond the continuation through video games, the franchise has also delved deeper into its captivating universe via novel adaptations, a live-action TV show, and graphic novels. One exciting aspect fans were looking forward to in “Halo Infinite” was the Endless, an advanced alien species. Yet, the Endless have not been extensively showcased in “Halo Infinite”. What makes this race particularly intriguing is that they are rumored to be even stronger than the Flood, a revelation that could potentially alter the established Halo lore.

The Endless in Halo Infinite Have Big Shoes to Fill

Being More Powerful Than the Flood is No Small Feat

The whole premise surrounding Halo is focused on the existential threat of the Flood. The titular rings in Halo, known as the Halo Array, were constructed specifically by the Forerunners to destroy all life, including the Flood, because they are just that dangerous. The Flood was long considered the biggest threat in the Halo franchise, but the inclusion of the Endless raises some questions about their danger level. If the Endless are more powerful than the Flood, then it will be incredibly difficult for Halo Infinite to prove that in a meaningful way.

In the upcoming Halo campaign, it’s likely that the enigmatic race known as the Endless will play a more significant part, given the hint dropped at the end of Halo Infinite. This ancient race was imprisoned by the Forerunners due to their fear of the Endless’ survival capabilities in the face of the Halo Array. The universe of Halo has barely touched upon this intriguing race, and the mystery surrounding them remains largely unsolved. However, surviving the devastation caused by the Halo Array is no small feat, making them potentially the most powerful race in the galaxy. Yet, a definitive explanation as to how they can endure such destruction still eludes us.

Among the distinctive powers attributed to the Endless is the capacity to master time, a talent that filled the Forerunners with dread. Indeed, their skill in time manipulation undeniably makes them a powerful species. However, it might be their connection with the Flood that truly poses the greatest threat.

The Endless and the Flood Could Go Hand in Hand

Currently, it appears that 343 Industries faces a challenging conundrum regarding why the Endless pose a greater threat than the Flood. Yet, it might be that the Endless are so dangerous precisely because of the Flood. As a parasitic entity, the Flood infects any intelligent life it encounters. If the Flood were to contaminate the Endless, then the Halo Array would lose its effectiveness. This certainly offers a strong argument as to why the Forerunners imprisoned the Endless on Installation 07: if they ever crossed paths with the Flood, it would be the end of the line.

The upcoming direction for the Halo series remains unclear at this point, however, delving deeper into the enigma of the Endless appears to be a strong possibility. As the passage of time will reveal, failing to further develop such a formidable adversary in subsequent games might feel unsatisfying. The idea of the Endless and the Flood clashing is indeed terrifying, yet it’s an intriguing concept that deserves more investigation.
