It appears that by May 2025, the direction of the Halo series remains somewhat uncertain. While Halo Infinite continues to receive regular updates, with its most recent one released at the beginning of May, there’s been no solid announcement about the next main entry in the franchise or any other ongoing Halo projects that are being worked on at present.
In October 2024, 343 Industries changed its name to Halo Studios. This name change coincided with the announcement that all future Halo video game projects would utilize Unreal Engine 5 instead of the aging Slipspace Engine. As a part of this, fans were given a peek at an internal test build called Project Foundry, which was clarified not to be a new game. However, it was mentioned that elements shown in the footage would be incorporated into future Halo games. At the moment, no details about these games or their release dates have been disclosed, but there’s a potential unveiling date on the horizon.
2026 Would Be The Perfect Time for Halo to Make Some Announcements
2026 Marks Halo’s 25th Anniversary
25 years from now, on November 15, 2026, the original game Halo: Combat Evolved and the entire Halo series will mark their silver jubilee, as it was first released for Xbox consoles on November 15, 2001.
Over the past 25 years, the Halo series has undergone significant transformations. Originally developed by Bungie, they’ve since passed the torch to 343 Industries, who have strived to maintain the franchise’s esteemed reputation while exploring fresh horizons. This ride hasn’t always been seamless, but on balance, the positives often overshadow the negatives. With Halo Studios preparing for a new chapter in the franchise’s history, the 25th anniversary seems like the perfect moment to unveil some exciting new projects.
Leading the pack is the much-talked-about remake/remaster of the iconic game, Halo: Combat Evolved. Whispers about this potential Halo revamp or overhaul first emerged in June 2024, with Tom Warren from The Verge hinting at a remaster being developed by Microsoft and potentially destined for rival consoles. A complete reimagining of Halo: Combat Evolved using Unreal Engine 5 could be an excellent strategy for Halo Studios to win over fans, and it would provide an ideal way to mark the original game’s 25th anniversary.
Halo’s 25th Anniversary Should Only Be The Beginning
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel exhilarated at the prospect of Halo: Combat Evolved’s remake or remaster being just the start of Halo Studios’ 25th anniversary celebrations. In their October 2024 Xbox Wire announcement, they hinted at multiple new games leveraging Unreal Engine 5, and I can hardly wait to catch a glimpse of these projects next November.
For a long time, enthusiasts have been eagerly demanding a wider variety of Halo video game projects, like innovative spin-offs that delve deeper into the Halo franchise’s storyline and gaming possibilities. The 25th anniversary of Halo: Combat Evolved could be an ideal opportunity for Halo Studios to breathe new life into the series by unveiling a host of fresh game announcements, finally fulfilling these long-held wishes.
