Hana-Kimi, a manga created by Hisaya Nakajo, first appeared in Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume magazine back in 1996. It ran for a total of 23 volumes before wrapping up, and it proved to be quite popular, selling millions of copies within Japan alone. Initial reports suggest sales exceeding 17 million, but with two English print releases by Viz Media, the global tally is estimated to be approximately 20 million.
Although Hana-Kimi didn’t get an anime version, it has been brought to life through multiple live-action adaptations. The initial one was broadcasted in 2006 with 15 episodes, followed by another in 2007 consisting of 12 episodes. Adaptations from other years include those aired in 2011 and 2012 respectively.
What Is Hana-Kimi Manga About?

The story revolves around Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese girl residing in the U.S., who encounters Izumi Sano during a track and field competition. Dazzled by his athletic prowess, she becomes determined to keep tabs on him professionally. Upon delving deeper into Izumi’s background, Mizuki learns that he studies at Osaka High School, an exclusive boys’ institution in Japan.
With a heart full of excitement, I decided to take the plunge and approached my dear parents with a request – to allow me to journey to the land of the rising sun, Japan. My ultimate goal? To attend the prestigious Osaka High School. In preparation for this new chapter in my life, I took drastic measures – I chopped off my hair and donned a disguise, eager to face whatever challenges awaited me on this incredible adventure.
Hana-Kimi will be available to stream on Crunchyroll.
