Summary
- Michael C. Hall returns in Dexter: Resurrection, with filming underway
- James Remar as Harry Morgan reprises role; Debra Morgan’s future uncertain
- Harry’s guidance crucial for Dexter’s recovery after surviving life-threatening incident.
In the upcoming release this summer titled “Dexter: Resurrection“, production is currently in progress. Michael C. Hall reprises his role as Dexter Morgan, and it has been confirmed that Jack Alcott, David Zayas, and James Remar will also return to the series. Notably, Remar played Harry Morgan in the original “Dexter” series, appearing in flashbacks and as a ghostly figure for Dexter. However, unlike in the limited series, “New Blood“, where Debra Morgan took over as Dexter’s deceased mentor, Harry was not present in that series.
It seems that Jennifer Carpenter may not be returning for Resurrection, which could indicate a possible conclusion to her portrayal of Debra Morgan within the Dexter universe. As James Remar now embodies Harry Morgan as a ghost, and given the time gap between the original series and Resurrection, it appears less probable that we’ll see Carpenter in flashbacks or significant roles.
Harry Morgan’s Return in Resurrection Could Make Debra’s Return Less Likely

In the initial “Dexter” series, Harry Morgan had already passed away, leading his presence to mostly manifest as spectral apparitions, as Dexter adhered to the code established by Harry to manage his inner darkness. Many viewers felt let down when Dexter’s adoptive father did not reappear in New Blood and was instead substituted by Debra Morgan, who offered a distinctly unsettling ghostly ambiance compared to Harry’s soothing presence. However, 12 years after James Remar last played the role of Harry Morgan, he is set to resume the character in the upcoming spin-off series, “Resurrection,” and it seems that he will continue to guide Dexter from beyond the grave in a similar manner as in the original series.
In a nutshell, it wouldn’t be fitting for Debra to resurface as a deceased character in Dexter’s life following the events of New Blood, where she was written off, leaving no room for return. Instead, there’s potential for further exploration of Harry Morgan’s backstory, introduced by Christian Slater in Original Sin, through James Remar’s original portrayal in Resurrection. Debra has been thoroughly developed over eight seasons, but Harry remains somewhat enigmatic, offering intriguing possibilities for future development.
Harry Morgan’s Code Makes His Return Arguably More Important in Resurrection
In the series titled “Resurrection“, Dexter Morgan, who was previously believed to be dead following a shooting by his son Harrison at the close of “New Blood“, miraculously survives. The merging of “Original Sin” with “Resurrection” finds Dexter being rushed to the hospital and making it through this near-death experience. As Dexter heals completely, he’ll require the spectral guidance of his long-passed father, Harry Morgan, as he navigates the challenge of ending the life of Coach Logan while confronting the reality that he is the Bay Harbor Butcher. With Dexter planning to elude authorities in “Resurrection“, it’s likely that his adoptive father, who has a unique understanding of his dark side, will be present in his subconscious. The secrets surrounding Harry’s past, unveiled in “Original Sin“, make his reappearance in “Resurrection” even more captivating, since there is much about the events leading to Laura Moser’s death that Dexter remains unaware of.
In the new series, Dexter will once again seek advice from Harry, as he plans to pursue evil individuals and adhere to his father’s stern principles. One might wonder why Dexter suddenly recalls Harry after their separation in New Blood, especially since they hadn’t been in contact for years following the end of the original series. However, it seems that a close brush with death may have triggered this reunion, and perhaps Harry will appear to Dexter during his time in the operating theater, urging him that he still has unfinished business as a vigilante against the wicked.
