With so many streaming services competing for viewers, HBO Max is raising its prices again, starting October 21st. Despite the increase, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is confident that popular shows like House of the Dragon (the Game of Thrones prequel) and The Last of Us will keep people subscribed. The company believes the quality of its content justifies the higher cost.
Today, services like Netflix and HBO Max dominate how we watch movies and shows, offering huge collections from classic films to the latest releases. Viewers appreciate the competition between these services, which has led to high-quality shows like Peacemaker on HBO Max and Fallout on Amazon Prime. However, the constant price increases for these platforms are causing friction between the companies and their subscribers.
New Cost of HBO Max Subscriptions
- HBO Max Basic With Ads Monthly: $10.99 (+$1 per month) Annually: $109.99 (+$10 per year)
- HBO Max Standard Monthly: $18.49 (+$1.50 per month) Annual: $184.99 (+$15 per year)
- HBO Max Premium Monthly: $22.99 (+$2 per month) Annual: $229.99 (+$20 per year)
Starting October 21st, HBO Max is increasing the price of all its subscription plans. The Basic plan with ads will go up by $1 a month (or $10 a year), the Standard plan by $1.50 a month (or $15 a year), and the Premium plan by $2 a month (or $20 a year). This means the new monthly prices will be $10.99 for Basic, $18.49 for Standard, and $22.99 for Premium. Annual subscriptions will cost $109.99, $184.99, and $229.99, respectively. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has said the company wants to offer good value while also being able to increase prices over time. While HBO’s new horror show, IT: Welcome to Derry, is attracting new viewers, some worry the price hikes could cause people to cancel their subscriptions despite popular programming.

David Zaslav talked about tackling password sharing – when multiple people use one streaming account – and hinted at more changes coming to HBO Max. Viewers have often wondered if streaming is really a better deal than traditional cable, especially with rising prices and constantly changing shows. It’s unclear if popular shows like The Pitt will be enough to keep people subscribed as costs go up, but Zaslav believes the quality of HBO Max’s programming will justify the price.

With so many options for streaming movies and TV shows, each service is focused on attracting viewers and making money. The challenge is keeping both customers happy and investors satisfied. As platforms like HBO Max raise their prices, many people are starting to wonder if the current boom in streaming will eventually come to an end.
