It’s widely known that George R.R. Martin, the author of Fire & Blood, and Ryan Condal, the showrunner for House of the Dragon, have a very strained relationship. Martin himself recently described it as “abysmal” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite any concerns, production will continue on the show. We’ve just found out that House of the Dragon will end after Season 4, leaving only 16 episodes to complete the story based on the events of The Dance of the Dragons.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Set to Return in 2027, House of the Dragon to Conclude with Season 4
There’s still good news for fans of the Game of Thrones universe! The prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is currently on air, premiering on Sunday nights. Set between the events of House of the Dragon and the original Game of Thrones, this series has a much smaller budget and less dramatic conflicts than its predecessors. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, who isn’t quite who he seems.
Good news for fans! A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming back for a second season, expected in 2027. House of the Dragon will return for a third season on HBO in the summer of 2026, but the show will conclude with its fourth season, which is planned for release in 2028.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys, Chairman and Content CEO of HBO, revealed that House of the Dragon will not continue beyond the story of the Targaryen family’s decline. There are currently no plans to go beyond that point in time.
Bloys confirmed that the show’s plan has always been to tell the complete story of the Targaryen family, following the timeline established in the books. For those familiar with the source material, they know how the Targaryens’ story ultimately concludes, meaning there’s a defined ending point for this particular narrative.
While House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Martin reportedly disagreed with showrunner Ryan Condal’s plans for Season 3. During a meeting with Condal, the show’s producers, and HBO executives, Martin apparently expressed that the show had diverged significantly from his original vision, stating, “This is not my story any longer.”
HBO Boss Addresses Game of Thrones Spinoff Speculation
Image via HBO So, about that potential Jon Snow and Arya Stark spin-off everyone’s talking about? HBO’s head of programming, Casey Bloys, wasn’t giving up any secrets. He did seem to get a kick out of all the excitement surrounding A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, though. Basically, he just reminded us that something being discussed in development is a long way from actually being made – it’s easy to get carried away!
It’s definitely interesting to see the level of excitement surrounding the Game of Thrones world. When The Seven Kingdoms launched, a lot of people immediately saw it as another spin-off from the original series.
I often point out that there have only been two spinoffs so far: House of the Dragon, and the recently released The Seven Kingdoms.
We’re working on a number of projects to increase our chances of finding a great show, but we haven’t actually created a huge amount of content yet. We’re not aiming for the scale of Marvel, releasing four series a year, so it’s easy to mistake early ideas and planning for finished shows.
There aren’t any confirmed plans for new Game of Thrones spinoffs right now. Fans can enjoy the current series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and anticipate the upcoming third season of House of the Dragon this summer.
Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are streaming on HBO Max.
