Stepping into the realm of film criticism, I’d like to share my thoughts on Blumhouse’s recent offering titled “Heart Eyes“. Labeling this movie as just another “slasher” would be a disservice to the rich tapestry Josh Ruben weaves. With Mason Gooding as Jay and Olivia Holt as Ally, this film masterfully blends humor, romance, and horror in a way that feels fresh and innovative.
Ally, a jaded advertising professional, finds herself on shaky ground following a failed ad campaign for her company. Enter Jay, a charming marketing whiz who could potentially snatch her job. But as we delve deeper into the story, it becomes clear that this isn’t your typical corporate drama.
Amidst the festivities of Valentine’s Day, the story unfolds, blending romance with the ominous presence of a serial killer infamously known as the “Heart Eyes Killer” or “HEK.” The film cleverly combines elements from different genres, providing delightful romantic scenes and pulse-pounding horror sequences. As Ally and Jay grapple with their personal and professional hurdles, they unwittingly become part of the Heart Eyes killer’s lethal chase, culminating in a surprising and exhilarating finale.
What Is Heart Eyes About
After experiencing a tough breakup, Ally has grown disillusioned about love and this perspective is evident in her recent marketing strategy. Instead of promoting the positive aspects of relationships, she focuses on their imperfections. Unfortunately, this approach has sparked criticism due to a series of murders by the Heart Eyes Killer, who preys on romantic couples, causing a wave of fear throughout the city. This atmosphere of dread makes Ally’s cynical campaign appear tone-deaf.
To rectify the predicament, Ally’s supervisor, Crystal (Gina Gershon), teams her up with Jay, an engaging and highly effective independent marketing consultant brought on board to revamp the company’s public reputation. Jay, who flourishes in romantic idealism, is diametrically opposed to Ally. While she considers love as overrated and doomed for failure, Jay is a staunch advocate of grand romantic gestures and the power of emotional bonds. Their contrasting viewpoints generate friction, as Ally resents being compelled to collaborate with someone who symbolizes everything she no longer subscribes to. Meanwhile, Jay views Ally’s cynicism as a challenge and is resolved to alter her outlook.
Collaborating under duress, Ally and Jay seemed destined for separate paths until an unexpected twist occurred when they encountered Ally’s former boyfriend outside a restaurant. In a spur-of-the-moment, slightly awkward instance, Ally kissed Jay to provoke her ex. Although the gesture was intended as harmless teasing, it unwittingly drew them into the sights of the Heart Eyes Killer, who focuses on individuals thought to be in love.
Although intended to be innocent, this action unintentionally places them within the sights of the Heart Eyes Killer, a person who focuses on those believed to be in love.
Unaware that they were about to be victims, the duo hopped into a ride-share vehicle heading towards Ally’s apartment. It was their intention to part ways once there, but Jay discovered that Ally had locked herself out and hurt himself while helping her gain entry to her building. They subsequently went to her apartment to attend to his injury. Suddenly, HEK sprang from Ally’s closet, triggering a chase sequence reminiscent of numerous slasher films as they scrambled for their lives, with the horror movie taking on a familiar pattern.
Initially, the duo seem to elude the Heart Eyes Killer (claiming they aren’t together and thus not his intended targets). But later, Jay gets arrested and charged as the Heart Eyes Killer by Detectives Hobbes (portrayed by Devon Sawa from ‘Final Destination’) and Shaw (Jordana Brewster). However, the murderer makes an appearance at the police station, slays some officers, and pursues Ally and Jay as they run away. They eventually find refuge in a drive-in movie theater on Valentine’s Day, where the Heart Eyes Killer claims more victims. Faced with the prospect of further bloodshed, the couple decide to confront him instead.

Following their joint effort to take down the HEK, Ally and Jay believe the crisis has passed. However, Jay attempts to persuade Ally to acknowledge a growing connection between them. Yet, she refuses his advances, instead, he departs with Detective Shaw – the only survivor of the Heart Eyes Killer’s police station assault.

Following her discovery of affection towards Jay, Ally gets a call from the Heart Eyes Killer, instructing her to visit a church if she wishes to save Jay’s life. Upon her arrival, it is disclosed that the HEK consists of three individuals: the couple they unintentionally killed at the drive-in, Detective Shaw, and a man named David, who Ally had a brief encounter with earlier in the movie, during which he invited her out on a date.
Jay and Ally get into a physical confrontation with Shaw and David and eventually manage to overcome and kill the two serial killers, ending the Heart Eyes Killer’s reign of terror once and for all. In the film’s final moments, the slasher flick transforms into a straight romance where Ally flips the script on Jay a year later and proposes marriage after he asked her to move in with him, because he knows she’s scared of romantic gestures. The two, it would seem, live happily ever after.
