Hell Has Frozen Over for PlayStation and Xbox (Again)

2025 has been a surprising year for PlayStation and Xbox fans, as the two companies have started breaking down the walls between their platforms, potentially ending the long-standing console war. Xbox began this trend last year by releasing a few games on PlayStation, but really accelerated things in 2025 with the launch of titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Forza Horizon 5 on the PS5.

PlayStation has reciprocated Xbox’s generosity by offering some games of its own. The MLB: The Show series has been available on Xbox for several years – though the decision wasn’t originally PlayStation’s – and recently, Helldivers 2 was also released on Xbox. Xbox fans had been eagerly requesting this popular co-op game, and were thrilled when it finally arrived. Coincidentally, on the same day Helldivers 2 launched on Xbox, Gears of War: Reloaded became available on PlayStation 5.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is Coming to PS5 in 2026

When Helldivers 2 launched on Xbox and Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation 5 in August, it felt like a major shift in the gaming world. Now, something even more surprising has happened: Xbox has announced that Halo is coming to PlayStation 5. Revealed at the Halo World Championships, Halo: Combat Evolved will be playable on PS5 next year, a move that would have seemed impossible just a couple of years ago.

Halo: Combat Evolved is a remastered version of the original Halo game, featuring updated graphics, new missions, and both local two-player split-screen and online four-player co-op. Its release on PlayStation 5 marks the first time a Halo game hasn’t been exclusive to Xbox consoles in 25 years. Many believe this signals a major shift, suggesting Xbox is no longer focused on directly competing with other consoles as it once was, effectively ending the console wars.

Whether PlayStation will respond by offering a similar franchise on Xbox remains to be seen. They’ve already shown they’re willing to release many of their popular games on PC, so they might be persuaded to do the same for Xbox consoles. There’s also speculation that the next Xbox will be able to access Steam, which would mean PlayStation exclusives could be played on Xbox hardware regardless. However, even if Xbox is building a new console, releasing its exclusive games is a significant shift, and Halo appearing on the PS5 would be a truly historic moment for both companies.
