Here’s My Current Pokemon Legends: Z-A Team Plan

The new Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, comes out on October 16th – that’s just around the corner! Early looks at the game have been mostly good, although some people are wondering if exploring Lumiose City might get a little repetitive. Personally, I’m excited to recapture the fun I had with Pokémon as a kid, and I’ve already started planning which Pokémon I want on my team!

There are rumors that *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* will feature a total of 230 Pokémon, and over 170 have already been confirmed. Now that we know most of the Pokémon available in the game, I’m starting to plan my team. I usually do this, though my plans might change as I play. For example, I won’t be including Yanmega because it hasn’t been officially confirmed or appeared on any leaked lists – if it were included, it would definitely be on my team! I always aim for a good balance of types to avoid being easily defeated by a single type of attack, but ultimately, I choose Pokémon that I genuinely enjoy and find appealing. Having fun with the Pokémon themselves is my top priority when building a team.

I’m open to including strong Pokémon like pseudo-legendaries or legendaries on my team, but I wouldn’t pick them *just* because they’re rare or powerful. Right now, though, I’m planning a team that won’t include any legendaries at all.

My #1 Pokemon Legends Z-A Pick: My Starter

At the beginning of the game, you naturally choose a starter Pokemon. I was a bit surprised to see Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as the options, particularly since *Pokemon Legends: Arceus* mixed things up by including Pokemon from different generations, and two of these are from Generation 2. However, my choice is easy: I’m picking Totodile! I’d choose Totodile over any other starter Pokemon, no question.

  • Feraligatr: Water
  • Mega Feraligatr: Water/Dragon (confirmed)

I’ve loved Totodile ever since playing *Pokemon Gold*, so adding it to my team was a no-brainer. While I’m not sure how much I’ll use Mega Feraligatr – we haven’t seen it in action yet – the details released so far look good, if not groundbreaking. Ultimately, Feraligatr secures my Water-type slot and gives me a Water/Dragon option if I need extra power during a battle.

My Next Pokemon Legends Z-A Pick: My Ace

I don’t usually think of Ampharos as a top-tier Pokémon, but it’s always been incredibly effective for me. It consistently delivers and I’ve never had a bad experience with it. If Mega Evolutions were available, Ampharos would be my first choice, especially since I really like Mega Ampharos’ design. I also think the Dragon-type addition makes sense, and I’m not concerned that both Feraligatr and Ampharos might gain a Dragon subtype through Mega Evolution, assuming the rumors about Mega Feraligatr are true.

  • Ampharos: Electric
  • Mega Ampharos: Mega Electric

Pokemon Legends Z-A Pick: Gogoat

I’ve been a fan of Gogoat since it first came out. While I think it would be better if it had a dual typing – something stronger than just Grass – I still really like having it on my team. At least with Gogoat and Ampharos together, I don’t have to worry much about Water-type Pokémon, which aren’t usually a big problem anyway. But I definitely want to include Gogoat!

  • Gogoat: Grass

I have a few goats myself, so I naturally prefer using Gogoat in the game. It’s only right to represent my own animals, after all!

Pokemon Legends Z-A Pick: Gallade

I’ve always liked Pokemon with branching evolutions, and Gallade and Gardevoir are prime examples. That’s why I have a soft spot for Ralts. (And a fond memory of Wally’s Ralts, too!)

  • Gallade: Psychic/Fighting

Pokemon Legends Z-A Pick: Aegislash

I’m a big fan of fantasy, and I really like that I can have a Ghost-type Pokémon that looks like a sword. I usually prefer Pokémon that are tough and durable, like Steel or Ground types, so Aegislash is a perfect fit for my teams. While I’d happily switch it for a Corviknight if I could get one in *Pokémon Legends Z-A*, I’m still really happy having Aegislash on my team.

  • Aegislash: Ghost/Steel

Pokemon Legends Z-A Pick: Krookodile

When it comes to powerful Pokémon types, Ground is definitely a top contender for my favorite. It’s hard to choose, and it really comes down to Hippowdon versus Krookodile. Personally, I think Krookodile has the better design, and I’m hoping that carries over into the next game.

  • Krookodile: Dark/Ground

I usually like to include a Bug-type Pokémon on my team, even if it isn’t Yanmega. However, none of my favorite Bug Pokémon are currently available. I’ll probably catch one early on and use it throughout the game, maybe even keep it on my final team. Once I have a team planned, though, I rarely change it.

My Pokemon Legends Z-A Team (As Currently Planned)

  • Feraligatr (Water)
    • Maybe Water/Dragon
  • Ampharos (Electric)
    • Electric/Dragon
  • Gogoat (Grass)
  • Gallade (Psychic/Fighting)
  • Krookodile (Dark/Ground)
  • Aegislash (Steel/Ghost)

I’m really pleased with how this team turned out! My goal is to enjoy the game and finish the main story, and I think these Pokémon will help me do that. If I could make any changes, I’d swap Aegislash for Corviknight and add a powerful Bug-type Pokémon I like, but those aren’t available. Considering what I *can* choose from, I’m very happy with the team I’ve built. My biggest concern is probably facing Fairy-types, especially Mega Clefable, but I have Aegislash to help with those battles, so I think I’ll be in good shape.
