Here’s What Happened at Home of Wargamers 2025

The recent Wargamers convention was packed with exciting announcements! I’m currently on vacation – if you’re a Patreon supporter, you’ve been following my travel diaries about the history of Spain. Because I’m away and need to get some rest for more sightseeing tomorrow, this update will be a little shorter than usual.

Finally, A New Spanish Civil War Wargame!

The biggest news from the livestream was the confirmation of a new game, *War in Spain 1936-1939*. It will feature an updated engine, similar to the one used in *War in the Pacific – Admiral’s Edition*, that blends land, sea, and air combat. This new engine enhances gameplay and realism with advanced AI and a comprehensive logistics system.

There’s been a lot of discussion about whether this game engine is suitable for depicting war, but the level of detail – both in representing the Spanish Civil War and in the planned Order of Battle, right down to individual companies – has definitely piqued my interest. Personally, I think it’s a promising approach. What are your thoughts – does this seem like a good idea to you?

Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War Is Bigger and Better

Flashpoint Campaigns, already a top-rated wargame expected to remain popular in 2025, is expanding with a new installment called Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War. For those new to the series – and we’ve been gaining a lot of players, especially from the real-time strategy community – what sets Flashpoint Campaigns apart is its dynamic turn system. Unlike traditional wargames with fixed turns, this system allows the commander who best controls the battlefield to issue more orders, more often, giving them a significant advantage.

So, Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War is seriously loaded with content – we’re talking 100 scenarios, 10 full campaigns, and you can play as 10 different nations! Plus, they’re including tutorials, which is awesome for getting into the game. Honestly, I’m already hoping they follow it up with Flashpoint Campaigns: 21st Century – that would be incredible!

WEGO World War II: Overlord Is Out On the Matrix Store

Combat Mission: Cold War Gets a New Blimey British DLC

I was hoping for some news about the future of the Combat Mission series, and to see what the developers have been up to, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

We heard from Marco that Combat Mission 3 is still in the works, which is good news. For now, though, they’ve released a new add-on for Combat Mission: Cold War called British Army of the Rhine. This DLC includes British, Canadian, and Russian paratrooper units. It’s a decent addition, but I’m really waiting for Combat Mission 3 to come out.

Modern Naval Warfare New Beta Coming Soon?

Man, it feels like ages since Modern Naval Warfare was first announced! Everyone was blown away by it, and then… silence. Apparently, the military took a serious interest, and we haven’t heard much since. But hey, good news – a beta is finally coming soon, and from what I’ve seen, the game is shaping up to be amazing!

Armored Brigade II Brings The Scandinavians To Fight

While Armored Brigade II is a great game, a Scandinavia-based expansion isn’t the most important addition right now. I’d prefer to see content focusing on conflicts like the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, various Israeli wars, or even the Iran-Iraq War developed first.

It would be great to see the game move beyond its traditional European setting, and that’s exactly what’s happening. The update includes 250 new units, a new map based on Sweden, and a brand new campaign to play through.

Shadow Empire Republica DLC

Shadow Empire, a highly-regarded 4X strategy and wargame, is getting a new expansion called Republica. This DLC introduces new government systems – like parliaments and senates – and gives factions more power to influence player decisions. Players will now need to negotiate and compromise to pass laws, as factions will directly try to shape policy.

Command: Modern Operations Tides of War DLC

The strategy game Company of Heroes is expanding with a new downloadable content pack called Tides of War. This expansion focuses on conflicts in the South China Sea involving China and other Asian nations.

Rule The Waves 3: Expanded Battles Has a Release Date

I previously detailed the ‘Rule the Waves 3: Expanded Battles’ expansion, and now we know it will be released on February 24th, 2026.

The Matrix Sale Is Underway

I won’t have time to put together a fresh list of recommendations for this sale, but my “10 Best Strategy and Wargames to Buy On The Matrix Summer Sale 2025” list is a great place to start – it should be really helpful!

Honestly, I was really hoping for a big overhaul for Combat Mission 3, but I’m a little disappointed. While the Spanish Civil War and the new Flashpoint campaigns sound cool, a lot of the other announcements just don’t really grab me – it depends on what you’re into and what you’re hoping to get out of the game right now.
