Summary
- Yoshida believes Hidetaka Miyazaki’s love for Bloodborne prevents him from letting others work on related projects.
- Miyazaki’s busyness with Elden Ring and its expansions hinders the development of Bloodborne sequels, remakes, and ports.
- Despite his absence from Sony, Yoshida’s insights into the gaming industry provide valuable theories and perspectives.
A theory about FromSoftware president and Dark Souls series director Hidetaka Miyazaki, which might seem improbable to some, seldom originates from a former Sony PlayStation executive.
After three decades with Sony, Shuhei Yoshida has become a true veteran of the gaming industry, making this particular theory seem a bit more plausible. However, he’s eager to clarify that this is not privileged information; it’s simply a speculation.
During a chat with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida expressed his own perspective on why FromSoftware hasn’t created a follow-up to the cherished game, Bloodborne.
As a dedicated admirer, I’d like to share that, as per the words of a previous PlayStation executive, studio head, and director of Bloodborne, Hidetaka Miyazaki, his passion for this game is so profound, he finds it difficult to entrust any project linked to it to another director.
As a passionate admirer, I can confidently say that Miyazaki-san has an immense affection for Bloodborne and the world he brought to life. Given his deep connection with the game, I’m sure he would be intrigued by the prospect of a sequel. However, due to his extraordinary success and overwhelming workload, he may not have the time to develop it himself. Yet, he cherishes the project so dearly that he wouldn’t want anyone else to tamper with it.
As per Yoshida’s statement, not only a potential sequel but also remakes, upgrades for new generations, and porting of games are less likely to materialize if Miyazaki continues to focus on different projects.
It’s quite understandable that he’s been keeping very occupied, given the triumph of Elden Ring and its initial DLC, coupled with the recent unveiling of the upcoming standalone expansion called Elden Ring: Nightreign.
Who is Shuhei Yoshida?
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that while video game creators are masters of immersive worlds and captivating storylines, they often aren’t the most charismatic individuals. When it comes to publishers with a corporate background, the charm factor tends to be even more elusive.
Indeed, it’s likely that you recall Reggie Fils-Aimé, a marketing executive who once worked for both Pizza Hut and Nintendo. Over time, he ascended to the position of Chief Operating Officer at Nintendo of America.
Or in a more conversational style:
Of course, you probably remember Reggie Fils-Aimé, the marketing executive who used to work with both Pizza Hut and Nintendo. Eventually, he became the COO of Nintendo of America.
Video game enthusiasts typically pay little heed to who’s managing the company, but Shuhei Yoshida stands out as an exceptional figure in this regard.
In 2013, Yoshida was frequently seen performing on stage during Sony’s E3 shows, and he often introduced several trailers for the PlayStation 4 himself.
In simpler terms, when Yoshida conducted an interview with Kinda Funny Games, it marked the conclusion of his career at PlayStation since that interview went live on the very next day after his departure from the company. Interestingly, Yoshida doesn’t appear to harbor any regrets about leaving the company he served for 31 years.
As he puts it: “I’m unemployed. I’m very free, enjoying freedom”.
