Hideo Kojima’s Physint Update is Hugely Exciting For One Big Reason

Approximately a year ago, Hideo Kojima unexpectedly showed up at a PlayStation State of Play event to unveil a fresh tactical espionage game titled Physint, designed exclusively for PlayStation platforms. While the celebrated game designer kept details about the storyline, setting, and mechanics of Physint under wraps, he did confirm that it will serve as a spiritual successor to his iconic creation, the Metal Gear series. The mere mention of this project sparked fervor among Kojima’s followers. A release date or timeframe for Physint was not disclosed at that time, but it is expected to hit shelves after the completion of his current projects, namely Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and OD.

Despite gamers having to wait until the next console generation for the release of “Physint”, recent developments hint that its development might be progressing faster than anticipated. Towards the end of 2024, Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear, announced an update on the upcoming game via Twitter. He disclosed that casting for “Physint” had been put on hold due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA video game voice actor strike, but he mentioned that his team intended to restart work on the game later this year. Although a delay is unfortunate, the fact that it’s already in the casting stage implies that Sony might reveal more about it soon.

Kojima May Share Some News About Physint’s Casting Soon

Like Many of Kojima’s Games, Physint Will Probably Have a Lot of Hollywood Talent Behind It

In Kojima’s games, it’s common to see big-name actors and celebrities. His latest game, Death Stranding, starred Norman Reedus as its lead character and included the likenesses of Guillermo Del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen, Troy Baker, among others. For his upcoming project OD, Sophia Lillis from the It duology and Jordan Peele, the director known for Get Out and Us, are involved. Kojima’s fascination with cinema is evident in his choice of casting for many of his recent projects.

It’s expected that the development of Physint will involve significant Hollywood talent, given that a film production company is participating in its creation. Last year, Hideo Kojima confirmed that Columbia Pictures, a subsidiary of Sony Pictures, and Sony Interactive Entertainment would be collaborating on the game. The exact role Columbia Pictures will play isn’t clear yet, but since Kojima described Physint as both a game and a movie, it seems their involvement could be more extensive than many might anticipate.

PlayStation May Be Saving Some Major Physint Announcements for 2026

As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the return of Physint later this year. If the script and plot have already been penned for this innovative game/movie hybrid, Sony might unveil them within the next two years. At the moment, Kojima is fully engrossed in delivering Death Stranding 2, so it seems unlikely he’ll offer any updates on his other projects in the near future. However, once Death Stranding 2 hits PS5 shelves this year, he might spill some beans about Physint and OD, whether related to casting or not.

In the 2024 video announcing Physint, Kojima emphasized that 2026 marks the “40th anniversary of his game production career.” This could be the year when Sony discloses more specifics about this tactical espionage game. Given that Kojima has described Physint as the pinnacle of his work, it seems likely he might hold back some game details for such a significant milestone in his career. It’s possible that by then, Kojima may even reveal some information about the cast of Physint.
