More than ten years past, acclaimed director Hidetaka Miyazaki faced a critical juncture, deciding to relinquish his directing duties for Dark Souls 2 in favor of Bloodborne – an ambitious gothic spin-off within the Soulsborne genre that has remained confined to exclusivity since its creation.

Currently, the president of FromSoftware might be feeling a sense of déjà vu as he finds himself standing at the same crossroads once more; this time, however, it’s for Elden Ring: Nightreign and The Duskbloods, an exclusive title for Switch 2, which was unveiled during the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement after learning directly from Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice Blog that none other than Mr. Miyazaki will be at the helm for The Duskbloods on our beloved handheld console! His latest revelations about the game have left me feeling like Nightreign, a title I thought I was looking forward to, might just be a consolation prize for gamers on other platforms compared to the masterpiece we’ll get to experience.

Although Elden Ring: Nightreign originated from his most prosperous series, it appears that the director’s creative influence has taken a backseat, as the focus has shifted entirely towards The Duskbloods for its triumph, mirroring the situation with Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne in the past.

Discussing the origin of the exclusive game for Nintendo Switch 2, Hidetaka Miyazaki shared some insights on its development.

Initially, a compact development team was focusing on it as a project for the Nintendo Switch. But when the game began to form its structure, we received discussions from Nintendo about the Switch 2, causing us to adjust our development strategy, considering this new hardware.

The director shared that initially, the game “The Duskbloods” was intended for the first version of the Nintendo Switch. However, as fate would have it, the development timeline coincided with the launch of its successor, which necessitated a reworking or updating of the game’s development by FromSoftware.

Additionally, he disclosed that the online capabilities of the forthcoming console were more aligned with the concept of the multiplayer-exclusive game, which made it advantageous for all parties participating in this venture.

The Duskbloods Doesn’t Just Seem Better Than Elden Ring Nightreign: It Is

Beyond the Armored Core series and collaborative summons in a handful of Soulsborne games, FromSoftware hasn’t had extensive history with the multiplayer genre. However, it appears that the studio is keen on diving deeper into this area, as they have two upcoming multiplayer projects in active development simultaneously.

Compared to Elden Ring: Nightreign, the Nintendo Blog showcases The Duskbloods more effectively, even though it’s limited to only one platform.

Beyond this, Hidetaka Miyazaki has shared insights into his PvPvE game, explaining that it will introduce unique gameplay foundations. Notably, the characters are inspired by vampires as its starting point. Diving deeper, he has also shared details about the competition for something called the First Blood, where you can select from a variety of more than a dozen characters to control in the game.

As a passionate gamer, I firmly believe that The Duskbloods for Switch 2 stands head and shoulders above Elden Ring: Nightreign, even if they were to be compared. If there was a competition, The Duskbloods would undeniably take the lead with its distinctive flair and groundbreaking gameplay mechanics. In contrast, Nightreign feels like an ordinary co-op game that seems to rely heavily on reusing assets from FromSoftware’s most celebrated titles.
