In the second installment of “WITCH WATCH”, titled “WITCH WATCH Episode 2”, our protagonist, Nico, is shifted into a novel setting – high school. Here, we continue to meet and familiarize ourselves with characters and the storyline. The episode provides a glimpse into what may become Nico’s daily routine (at least for the time being).

So far, I’ve found the Witch Watch series quite amusing, yet it appears there’s potential for a more profound narrative, given the unfortunate fate that’s hinted to befall Nico. The second episode maintained high-quality animation, possibly due to its lack of intense action sequences.

Is A Witch Going To Regular School: Is It A Good Idea?

In Episode 2, Nico embarks on her high school journey – recalling from the initial episode, she mentioned that assisting others is vital for her training’s completion. Although it isn’t compulsory, attending school appears to be an effective method for her to accomplish this goal since she will encounter numerous individuals who might require aid.

Additionally, Nico has harbored a desire to attend school and interact with peers her own age, an experience she’s been denied due to her training. Fortunately, it appears that this universe does not have “witch schools,” offering a fresh perspective.

Initially, I didn’t want her to disclose her real self as a witch because I was concerned it would attract unwanted scrutiny. Interestingly, this episode delves deeper into my backstory, revealing how the other children shunned me upon discovering my ogre identity.

Deep down, although he appears stern towards Nico, he actually yearns for her to form friendships. He feared that her peers might reject her if they discovered certain truths about her. Initially, Nico reluctantly follows along with his strictness, or at least attempts to do so.

During classroom introductions, Nico discreetly employs a charm named Embbigen (equivalent to Biggun in Japanese). This enchantment amplifies objects’ size. She intended to aid Moi with his eraser, but by mistake, she expanded his hair, head, arm, and later herself. The first portion of the episode predominantly focuses on this spell causing chaos within the classroom. Remarkably, the humor remains fresh throughout.

Eventually, Nico’s secret as a witch becomes evident, prompting her to disclose her true identity. The classroom teacher then mentions that her mother had previously notified the school that she was still in the process of finishing her training.

With A Little Magic, The Class Can Fly High

Initially, it appears that Nico may be ostracized as an outsider in class. Yet luckily, two girls extend an invitation for her to join them at a diner after school – these are Kara Minami and Kukumi Ureshino. It seems that they will become Nico’s dearest companions within the school community.

Kara inquires about Moi, and it appears she has romantic feelings for him (he’s said to be quite attractive), but we’ll likely gather more details about them in future episodes. There’s a touching moment where Nico discusses Moi, and she dismisses him as “not so impressive”, unaware that he’s standing by to guard her from some troublemakers.

The following day, it turns out that Nico’s classmates are thrilled about her being a witch and she has gained quite a bit of popularity. Since the initial class of the day is “recreation”, students have the freedom to pick their activities. Intrigued by Nico’s magical abilities, everyone asks for her to demonstrate some magic. As a result, she creates a protective barrier in an outdoor space where they can all fly together.

Yet, it may appear as if trouble arises when a vehicle crashes into the barricade, but Moi swiftly averts a collision with his extraordinary power. This unexpected display of strength, in turn, reveals him as an ogre. Rather than shunning him, everyone finds this trait intriguing instead – demonstrating that Class 3 is far from ordinary, and the series has set the stage for the unusual to become commonplace.

Several References to Shonen Jump Manga

In this particular episode, the teacher seems to have a hidden passion for manga, as numerous allusions to the Shonen Jump series can be spotted. For instance, when Moi’s hair grows thanks to Nico’s spell, the teacher ponders if it isn’t reminiscent of Gon Freecs from Hunter x Hunter. Furthermore, discussions about Demon Slayer and Dragon Ball occur throughout the episode.

Since the upcoming show is likely to include more nods to other series, “Jump” enthusiasts now have an additional motivation to check it out.

What’s Next For Witch Watch?

In the sneak peek for the upcoming episode, not too many details are given about its content. However, it’s anticipated that we’ll catch a glimpse of Nico navigating her daily routine at school in her new life. Additionally, there’s a strong chance she’ll unintentionally conjure spells that only seem to worsen the situation.

The first season of “Witch Watch” can be streamed on platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll. Notably, Netflix plans to add dubbed episodes approximately three weeks following the release of the subtitled versions.
