Highguard Character Guide: Roles, Abilities & Strategies

As a Highguard player, I can tell you it’s a really intense PvP experience! Teamwork is super important, and figuring out which Warden to play – there are a bunch, each with unique skills – is key to winning. It can feel a little overwhelming at first, honestly, because there’s so much to learn, but it’s a non-stop battle, so you quickly get into the swing of things!

This guide provides a complete overview of all playable characters in Highguard, explaining how to unlock them and use their unique abilities. It’s designed to help players master every Warden in the game.

Every Wartden in Highguard & Ability Overviews

As a Highguard fan, I’m really happy to say that you can get access to all of the Wardens right away! You don’t need to complete any special quests or anything to unlock them – at least, that’s how it is with the current lineup. I’ve put together a quick guide to all the Wardens, including what Roles they fill and what their abilities are.

Atticus

  • Role: Assault
  • Good For: Chasing/Rushing
  • Strong Points: Damage, Mobility, CC

Atticus excels at quickly overwhelming enemies with a swift attack and a storm of lightning spears that break their defenses and reduce their speed. He’s highly mobile, able to hover and fire spears with his Ultimate ability, and his passive skill lets him gather resources more efficiently.

  • Tactical Power – Shockspear: Throws a charged spear that shocks nearby opponents. Continuous damage charges his passive.
  • Passive – Supercharged Axe: Charged Axe releases an electrical explosion that damages nearby resource nodes.
  • Ultimate – Powerstorm: Rise into the air and rain lightning spears that do heavy damage to players and structures.

Atticus is a really flexible character, but he’s at his best during Siege matches. His ultimate ability can clear out an entire room, revealing enemies and the Bomb Target. If you’re new to the game, Atticus is a great character to start with.

Condor

  • Role: Recon
  • Good For: Finding Enemies, Defensive Play
  • Strong Points: Great For Tactical maneuvers and Detection of Enemies

Condor excels at providing tactical support for her team. She can send out Hawk to scout the area like a drone, and automatically alerts everyone to nearby enemies. Her ultimate ability also lets her hide her team and disrupt the enemy’s vision, helping to control the battlefield and give her allies an edge.

  • Tactical Power – Eyes in the Sky: Send out her bird, which scans to detect enemies that move.
  • Passive – Hinter’s Instinct: Condor’s Bird warns her when enemies are nearby.
  • Ultimate – Soaring Guardian: Launch 3 smoke clouds that reveal enemies within its wake.

Condor’s ultimate ability can be a game-changer in sieges by effectively blocking enemy vision. It’s comparable to a powerful combination from Apex Legends – similar to Bloodhound’s ultimate and Bangalore’s smoke – because it not only hides areas from the enemy but also shows where they are within the obscured space, making it much easier to target and eliminate them.

Kai

  • Role: Defensive
  • Good For: Holding the Fort, Crowd Control
  • Strong Points: Can fix walls, Ultimate turns him into a living siege engine

Kai is a solid tank character and a helpful support, able to repair damaged buildings. He can be frustrating to play against during Siege modes, but teammates will appreciate having him on their side when defending. His tactical ability lets him create ice walls to block enemies, and his ultimate transforms him into a powerful, destructive force.

  • Tactical Power – Ice Wall: Create an ice wall at the target location.
  • Passive – Frozen Repair: Restore broken walls with ice.
  • Ultimate – Frost Giant: Transforms into Kai’s Inner Ice Demon (he gains a powered up attack, health, and defense).

Kai excels at turning the tables during sieges. He can rapidly create Ice Walls to defend objectives and trap opponents within rooms using Ice repair. He then swiftly transforms and attacks when enemies are at their weakest. While challenging to learn, Kai provides a significant tactical edge to any team.

Mara

  • Role: Support
  • Good For: Defending Allies, Restoring Shield, Defensive Plays
  • Strong Points: Uses Downed Enemies to recharge Tactical, Grants Overshield

In Highguard, Mara functions most like a support character. Her special ability quickly restores her teammates’ (and her own) shields, and even provides extra protection when they’re fully charged. Uniquely, she can regain power by using fallen enemies. Her ultimate ability creates a temporary spawn point with limited uses, but it’s incredibly helpful during Siege battles.

  • Tactical Power – Soul Armor: Grants allies an overshield that absorbs damage.
  • Passive – Sacrifice: Sacrifices downed enemies to recharge your tactical.
  • Ultimate – Immortal Coil: Create a spawn point for your team.

Mara is really helpful during Sieges because she can both support her teammates and defend herself while also bothering the enemy team. Players often focus their attacks on her first, as she can be a major problem if left unchecked. A smart tactic is to use her ultimate ability to create a hidden respawn point within the enemy base – just make sure to conceal it well for a significant advantage.

Redmane

  • Role: Destruction
  • Good For: Siege/Breaking Walls
  • Strong Points: Good AoE, Critical in Sieges

Redmane is the best choice for a siege attacker. He deals massive damage to walls, even fortified ones, and creates chaos within the enemy base, becoming stronger and faster with each enemy defeated. His simple controls make him perfect for new players – just focus on destroying walls and eliminating anything in your path.

  • Tactical Power – Pounce: Smash through breakable walls. Hold to charge a powerful leap.
  • Passive – Enraged: Gains a movement and reload speed buff after killing an enemy.
  • Ultimate – Beast’s Roar: Roar to destroy walls and other breakable objects in front of you. It also damages enemies.

Redmane excels at quickly infiltrating enemy lines, eliminating threats, and then exploiting weaknesses in their defenses to plant bombs. He’s essentially a mobile siege weapon, making him a high-priority target, so stay cautious. Take the lead, but always support your team and avoid going in alone.

Scarlet

  • Role: Assault
  • Good For: Infiltration Tactics, Single Target Damage
  • Strong Points: Stealth Mode, Breaches Walls, Broken Ultimate

Scarlet is currently the most popular and effective character choice in Highguard. She excels at sneaking, eliminating targets, and even moving through walls, allowing her to easily infiltrate bases and plant bombs – unless Condor is defending. Her ultimate ability is incredibly powerful and can potentially eliminate the entire enemy team if used strategically.

  • Tactical Power – Sandstorm: Enter stealth mode, making yourself hidden to enemies who are far away.
  • Passive – Shifting Sands: Shift a destructible wall into sand temporarily, making it passable.
  • Ultimate – Whirling Blades: Throw up to 6 deadly daggers. Killing a player resets your cooldowns.

Scarlet excels at stealth and infiltration. She can sneak into enemy bases unnoticed if a Condor player doesn’t see her right away, and then phase through walls using her special ability. Once inside, she plants a bomb and uses her ultimate ability on anyone who comes near, eliminating them. This resets her skills and disorients the enemy team from within.

Slade

  • Role: Assault
  • Good For: Frontal Fights, Sieges
  • Strong Points: Strong AoE, Strong Damage, Deadly Ultimate

Slade is a powerful attacker who excels at damaging enemies near fortified bases, thanks to his special abilities. He also has a unique defensive trick: when defeated, he explodes, potentially allowing him to quickly rejoin the fight. Plus, his ultimate ability has the largest area of effect of any character in Highguard.

  • Tactical Power – Heatwave: Sends out a cascading wave of molten fire.
  • Passive – Firebomb: Explodes and spreads magma to an area.
  • Ultimate – Firestorm: Rains down fire upon the targeted area.

Slade excels at directly engaging enemies, making him perfect for players who like to take the lead in fights. While his abilities are very powerful, they take a while to recharge. His ultimate ability is incredibly damaging in a specific area and is especially good at forcing enemies out of fortified positions. Time it carefully to turn the battle in your favor.

Una

  • Role: Defensive
  • Good For: Holding the Fort/Driving Enemies Out of the Base
  • Strong Points: His Ultimate is like having another team member

I play Una when I really want to lock things down and play defensively. He’s awesome for Sieges if you’re the type of player who prefers holding a position rather than rushing in. I can basically rain explosives on anyone who comes near, and I’ve got this Tree Spirit I can summon – it’s like a mobile turret! Plus, other spirits constantly bring me loot, so I never run out of resources. It’s all about that fortified defense with Una.

  • Tactical Power – Forest Wisps:Summon mischevious spirits who lob concussion grenades at enemies.
  • Passive – Helping Hand: Spirits appear to give Una loot.
  • Ultimate – Tree Walker: Summon a large forest spirit that throws smaller explosive spirits at enemies.

I’ve been playing Una, and honestly, she’s amazing paired with Kai – they’re a seriously solid defensive combo. My only real gripe is that her passive doesn’t quite mesh with the rest of her kit. It’s not a total loss though, because those little spirits that grab loot for her can actually be pretty helpful in a pinch.
