The first update for Highguard is now available for players on both PC and consoles. This patch focuses on improvements and doesn’t change how the game plays, but the developers have hinted that bigger updates with more changes are coming soon.
Highguard is a new team-based shooter that was first revealed at The Game Awards 2025. It’s the first game from Wildlight Entertainment, a studio of 61 people including developers who previously worked on popular games like Titanfall and Apex Legends. In Highguard, teams of three players battle for control of changing objectives, ultimately leading to a raid on the enemy base. Players select unique heroes—called Wardens—and fight to capture the Shieldbreaker, a powerful device used to break through enemy defenses and initiate the final attack. The game is free-to-play and became available on January 26th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
First Highguard Update Introduces Crash Fixes
Just a day after its launch, the game Highguard received its first update. Wildlight, the game developer, didn’t release detailed notes, but said the update fixes several crashes and improves stability. Console players will find it as build version 1.002.000. However, the PC update is quite large – around 18GB – and will require players to download the game again.
Highguard Devs Promise More Updates Are Coming Soon
Following the initial update, the developers assured players they are actively working on further improvements. In a statement, Wildlight explained they are still looking into problems and plan to release more fixes this week. Like with many online games, these immediate updates will likely focus on bug fixes, as bigger changes like gameplay balancing will take more time. This update came as Highguard recently became very popular on Steam, reaching a peak of over 97,200 players.
We’re continuing to investigate issues and expect to have more patches throughout the week.
As of January 27th, Highguard was the 16th most popular game on Steam, based on player activity over a 24-hour period. While it didn’t appear among the top 20 games on the PlayStation or Xbox stores (which only show relative rankings and don’t share player numbers), Highguard had a 31.12% positive review rating on Steam as of early morning (ET) on January 27th. However, Valve categorized the overall reception as “Mostly Negative.” Players have reported various problems, including technical issues with sound, concerns about the game’s strict anti-cheat software, and criticisms of the game’s structure and how it unfolds.
Players who have tried Highguard early on Steam praise the gunfights as the best part of the game, but feel they don’t happen often enough. Much of the time is spent gathering items and waiting for a key character to appear, creating periods of slow gameplay. This has led some players to believe the game may have started as a different design before becoming a 3v3 experience. Some fans think a simpler deathmatch mode would be better, removing extra features that interrupt the action. Others suggest increasing the team sizes to make the maps feel less empty and speed up the matches.
First Highguard Content Update Coming in February 2026
Making big changes to how the game is played, to fix issues with what players are doing, would be a much bigger project for Wildlight Entertainment than simple adjustments. Right now, there’s no sign they’re planning to do that. Instead, the studio recently revealed its plans for the next year, starting with a major update called “Episode 2” in February and March 2026. The first part of the update will add a new character, a new mount, a new map, and a full Ranked Mode. The second part, coming in March, will introduce a new raid feature and a new base type.
