Their rivalry doesn’t set them apart but makes them remarkably alike.

In their opening game, Hinata put forth his utmost effort, but unfortunately, his team couldn’t match his pace. Simultaneously, although Kageyama was prevailing, he felt dismayed by his teammates’ subpar performance. Despite their disagreements, it was evident that they both harbored a profound love for volleyball. Post-match, Kageyama directly questioned Hinata, “What have you been up to for the past three years?”, which served as an eye-opener for Hinata, making him realize he hadn’t given his best during that period. Later on, Hinata publicly declared his intent to outlast everyone. The closing moments of Episode 1 depict Hinata training with the girls’ volleyball team, something he initially hesitated to do, indicating a shift in his mindset towards striving for Kageyama’s level. The phrase “Kitagawa Dai-Ichi bitterly defeated” is also used, further highlighting Kageyama’s challenges in becoming a team player.

Their Co-Existence Was a Necessity

When Hinata and Kageyama found themselves at Karasuno High, I noticed their history intertwining once more. At first, there seemed to be a mutual reluctance to team up. Hinata, with his burning passion, was still green behind the ears, which made Kageyama doubt his genuine effort. This perceived lack of commitment from Hinata fueled Kageyama’s criticisms, and it infuriated Hinata because he felt he was giving everything he had.

He even requested that Kageyama always serve the ball at full force because he would ensure to spike them successfully.

Simultaneously, Hinata, through Kageyama, showcased his quickness and dexterity effectively. Together, they devised a swift combination attack that left their rivals stunned and contributed to numerous victories.

They Continue to Grow Off Each Other

During their game against Aoba Johsai High, their swift and tactically sound offensive strategy began to falter. Oikawa anticipated it flawlessly and thwarted it. Originally, Kageyama and Hinata thought that speed was the most potent weapon in volleyball, which was why they complemented each other so effectively. However, their defeat against Aoba Johsai made them question this belief. Up until then, Hinata relied heavily on Kageyama to maximize his abilities. But now, he had to discover means to shine independently.

In a fresh approach, Hinata undergoes a transformation within his role for the team. Aware of his constraints, Hinata metamorphoses into an effective decoy. His swiftness and court presence serve as excellent diversions, enabling Kageyama to pass the ball to other players. Moreover, he sharpens his additional abilities, such as blocking and receiving. In Season 4’s Episode 15, a remarkable event unfolds: Hinata successfully blocks Osuma on his own, leaving both himself and everyone else amazed.

In that exhilarating showdown with Inarizaki High, I found myself consistently missing my marks, struggling to score a single point. Yet, Kageyama, brimming with unwavering faith, continued to hurl those precision-crafted serves in my direction. It’s incredible to see the transformation of a player once deemed non-team oriented, now confidently relying on his comrades. This newfound trust stems from Hinata, who boldly embraced Kageyama’s tosses, regardless of any doubts. At this pivotal moment in our anime journey, we evolved from being solo virtuosos into a harmonious team, each of us relying on the other to reach new heights.

As they collaborate, Hinata and Kageyama are constantly competing with each other. Their rivalry drives them both to strive for volleyball greatness. In this journey, they’ve not only developed themselves but have significantly contributed to each other’s growth as well.
