Hinata’s Untapped Potential: How Naruto Missed the Mark on Her Character Development

Summary

  • Hinata Hyuga had untapped potential in Naruto.
  • There were many ways to properly develop Hinata’s character.
  • Hinata may still shine in Boruto despite past neglect.

The following article contains spoilers for Naruto and Boruto.

I’m absolutely smitten by the captivating world of “Naruto”, one of the most renowned shonen manga out there! Characters like Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha undergo remarkable transformations, growing in strength and depth as the story unfolds. Their compelling backstories not only enrich the series but also make us root for them all the more!

In my observation, not every character’s growth was as captivating as those seen in Naruto. It’s understandable that secondary characters might not receive the same depth of development as main ones, but I believe Naruto could have given more attention to a few key figures over its 72 volumes. Many viewers express disappointment about Sakura Haruno, who could have been more fully developed, but there’s another significant character who deserved more screen time: Hinata Hyuga.

Hinata Hyuga Had A Lot of Potential

Initially in the narrative, there emerges an engaging subplot centered around Hinata: being the oldest child of Hiashi Hyuga and thus the heir to the Hyuga clan, one might expect great things from Hinata. However, contrary to these high expectations, Hiashi eventually grew doubtful about her capabilities for the role. Eventually, he chose to disinherit her; in the anime, this was symbolized by her losing a battle against her younger sister Hanabi. Interestingly, it’s worth noting that Hinata herself did not wish to engage in such a conflict.

Nevertheless, Neji Hyuga, belonging to a lesser-known lineage within his clan, harbored resentment towards its primary members, including Hinata. He’s bitter because individuals from secondary branches are never granted the same esteem or given leadership roles in the clan, even if they surpass main branch members in strength. In fact, Neji openly asserts that Hinata lacks the qualities of a ninja and considers her a disappointment – comments that deeply wounded her.

Besides Hinata’s involvement in the Hyuga Affair early in the timeline, these events could serve as strong foundations for her character development. As the narrative unfolds, Hinata demonstrating her worth as a ninja is a recurring theme. However, there’s room for her to show even more depth and complexity than what was portrayed in the story.

There Were Many Routes to Develop Hinata Properly

Beyond the challenges Neji posed, Hinata’s father was harsh towards her. He subjected her to a rigorous training regimen from a tender age, only to ignore her once he found her younger sister more promising. Prideful man that he was, Hiashi fancied Neji for leadership potential, overlooking Hinata. However, the anime depicted him as being somewhat gentle with his daughters. Yet, it’d be heartening to see Hinata assert herself, despite her timid nature. She needn’t turn aggressive; instead, she could demonstrate that they can’t trample on her dignity.

I will never go back on my word… Because that too is my nindo, my ninja way!

— Hinata Hyuga

The narrative might have delved deeper into the Byakugan through Hinata’s perspective; although it receives some attention, Naruto often focuses heavily on the Sharingan, leaving the Byakugan somewhat underexplored. Hinata doesn’t necessarily need to become the most powerful shinobi, but her character could have been further developed by Kishimoto. Some viewers feel that Hinata’s story is predominantly tied to Naruto Uzumaki; while this isn’t entirely accurate, it’s easy to see why fans might think so, given their romantic arc. Hinata seems overshadowed by other characters. Even though it’s reasonable for Hinata not to lead the Hyuga clan, she could have demonstrated more cunningness. While Hinata typically avoids complex political schemes, she could have shown her inner strength in a more active manner, as she is indeed strong.

Can Hinata Still Get Some Spotlight in Boruto?

In the finale of “Boruto: Naruto Next Generations,” Kawaki seals Hinata and Naruto, leaving them enclosed in “Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.” Due to Eida’s application of Omnipotence to alter people’s recollections, most individuals now think that Hinata and Naruto were slain by Boruto Uzumaki.

Upon their return, it’s possible but unlikely that she’ll demonstrate her powers. Given the storyline thus far, it seems more probable that her daughter Himawari will undergo a character development similar to what Hinata might have experienced. The narrative could delve into Himawari being the Jinchuriki of the Nine Tails, exploring aspects of the Hyuga lineage and the Byakugan. However, Hinata, concerned about Kawaki, may become more involved in the series when she returns, perhaps taking on a more active role.

What’s Next in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex?

The anime “Boruto: Two Blue Vortex” is at present captivating viewers with an exceptional storyline, delving into the capabilities of Shinju Clones. In a highly anticipated confrontation, Boruto and Jura, the head of the Shinju Clones, are locked in battle. Fans anticipate this arc to conclude within a few chapters, possibly paving the way for the narrative to revolve around Kawaki and the Otsutsuki thereafter.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is available on MANGA Plus in English and many other languages.
