It’s likely that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy will be developed at some stage, given the outstanding performance of the initial game. Despite the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling’s transphobic statements, the first game sold more than any other title in its release year and it seems unlikely that Warner Bros. would overlook such a profitable intellectual property.
In other words, it makes good business sense to continue the successful adaptation of Harry Potter, given that its game, Hogwarts Legacy, came out before Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is considered one of Warner Bros.’s biggest gaming flops.
Regardless of its widespread acclaim, it’s hard to label Hogwarts Legacy as flawless. It falls short in crucial aspects such as environment design, storytelling, and RPG mechanics, frequently appearing as a rather shallow and empty gaming experience. A less-mentioned issue is the game’s enemy variety: set in the vivid and magical universe of Harry Potter, Hogwarts Legacy primarily features battles against goblins, trolls, spiders, or humans, which can become repetitive quickly. If Avalanche Software aims to enhance combat and gameplay diversity for Hogwarts Legacy 2, this could be a valuable area to focus on for improvement.
Enemies That Should Appear in Hogwarts Legacy 2
Dementors
In the potential sequel of Hogwarts Legacy 2, dementors – spectral entities cloaked in tattered black garments and known for draining victims’ emotional energy, could possibly make an appearance. If they do appear, it would likely be connected to a significant storyline development that might involve the player-character visiting Azkaban, the Wizarding World’s maximum-security prison, where dementors are usually stationed. Introducing dementors in Hogwarts Legacy 2 could also bring about the implementation of a Patronus Charm mechanic for an exciting gameplay experience.
Basilisk
In the Harry Potter series, the most significant portrayal of a basilisk is found in “The Chamber of Secrets.” Here, it’s disclosed that Salazar Slytherin bred this fearsome creature to guard the secret chamber below Hogwarts. As basilisks are sparsely mentioned in the original texts, the upcoming game Hogwarts Legacy 2 has an opportunity to expand upon these creatures using the interactive format. The Basilisk’s powers, particularly its lethal gaze, could add a tactically engaging element to combat encounters. Given its importance in lore and large size, it would likely be confined to a boss fight.
Werewolves
In contrast to the previously mentioned beings, werewolves seem less exceptional since they have been featured in numerous video games. However, they can still be terrifying and provide an exciting, intense variation among the humanoid adversaries found in Hogwarts Legacy. A confrontation with a werewolf could be particularly impactful as a boss fight, where a character the player has built a connection with is unveiled as being afflicted by this dreadful curse, transforming under the pallor of a full moon.
Vampires
One intriguing and sometimes overlooked aspect of the Harry Potter universe is the portrayal of vampires, which echoes traditional folklore and legends. Like their counterparts in these stories, they are creatures that feed on blood, recoil from sunlight, and are repelled by garlic. However, unlike popular belief, they are not immortal in J.K. Rowling’s vision; instead, they have a lifespan of around two centuries before succumbing to old age. They face societal prejudice but are not entirely ostracized or criminalized, as demonstrated by Horace Slughorn inviting a vampire to his annual Christmas party in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In other Harry Potter media, these creatures play minor roles. The upcoming Hogwarts Legacy 2 could expand on this by featuring them more prominently, offering an entertaining twist on human-like adversaries while delving deeper into their background and lore.
