The hit video game, Hogwarts Legacy, has been a monumental triumph for Warner Bros. and Avalanche Software. This success is likely to significantly influence the business strategies of both companies in the future. In fact, as the top-selling game of 2023, Hogwarts Legacy is poised to shape the gaming division of Warner Bros., possibly marking its most significant achievement in the interactive entertainment sector.
In terms of financial success, Warner Bros.’ gaming venture with Hogwarts Legacy has been unprecedented, but whether it stands out creatively is a topic up for debate. While the game boasts numerous strengths, critics find many aspects, such as its narrative, progression systems, and world design, to be unremarkable and predictable. Removing the enchanting Harry Potter veneer exposes Hogwarts Legacy as formulaic and cautious, avoiding anything daring that could be considered a creative advancement. This conservative approach is also reflected in the game’s enemy variety, with only a limited number of unique enemies to battle, leading many to anticipate that future installments might expand the enemy roster by either innovating or building upon the existing foundation.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Could Address the Spider in the Room
Spiders Are Over-Represented in Hogwarts Legacy
Exploring the enemy-filled territories within Hogwarts Legacy, specifically caverns and other thickly wooded outdoor areas, gamers will undoubtedly encounter a multitude of giant spiders, commonly known as acromantulas. Some will be bigger than others, some will spin webs, and some will launch attacks by jumping through the air aggressively. However, they are all spider-like creatures with just a hint of magical elements. Apart from humans and goblins, these are the creatures that players in Hogwarts Legacy will encounter most frequently during combat.
As a gamer, I must admit, I’m feeling a bit let down with Hogwarts Legacy. Given that it’s built on the Harry Potter IP, brimming with unique and formidable fantasy creatures like vampires, basilisks, and werewolves, you’d think the acromantulas would offer something special in combat. However, it seems they just take up hours of our game time without leading to anything more challenging or interesting. To make matters worse, spiders are quite overused in fantasy games, often serving as beginner enemies that we need to conquer before facing more complex threats. Unfortunately, even in Hogwarts Legacy, these acromantulas don’t escalate into greater threats or transform into intriguing adversaries themselves.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Should Hone in Spider Intelligence
One of the disappointing elements of the portrayal of Acromantulas in ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ is the underutilization of their most distinctive feature: their intelligence. Based on the original material, acromantulas possess far greater intellect than one might initially assume, as they are recognized for their intricate social structures and rituals, such as marriage and family dynamics that mimic humans. Aragog, a key Acromantula character from the ‘Harry Potter’ series, is even capable of speaking English, and forms a bond with Hagrid.
It’s a pity that in Hogwarts Legacy, complex creatures like acromantulas aren’t given the depth they deserve by showcasing their advanced reasoning and emotional intelligence. The idea of these creatures possessing both brutal aggression (with a taste for human flesh) and intellectual prowess is intriguing and could make them more terrifying and multidimensional in Hogwarts Legacy 2. Maybe the sequel might feature an acromantula antagonist, one that employs clever strategies and deceptions instead of just brute force to challenge the player-character. Alternatively, these enemies could demonstrate their intellect by being elusive during combat, hiding in crevices or slipping into the shadows, attacking only when the player is off guard. It’s this potential for strategic thinking that distinguishes acromantulas from the giant spiders found in games like World of Warcraft and Skyrim, so Hogwarts Legacy 2 should make use of it.
