As someone who grew up with Harry Potter books and movies as a constant companion during the holiday season, the magic of Hogwarts Legacy brought back those nostalgic feelings in spades. The game perfectly captured the warmth and coziness of Hogwarts during the holidays, but I can’t help but feel that it could have gone even further in immersing us in the spirit of these special times.
As November fades away, it’s time once more for the holiday season to be in full swing. This means the reappearance of bright lights, family gatherings, and not surprisingly, annual Harry Potter movie marathons. Although there’s no apparent connection between holidays at first glance, the series has become a cherished holiday tradition for many fans, largely because Hogwarts always radiated a warm, cozy ambiance during the holidays in the initial films. This comforting, nostalgic feeling was beautifully captured when Avalanche Software brought Hogwarts back to life in Hogwarts Legacy.
Ever since it was announced that a sequel is in the works, fans have been eagerly speculating about the potential offerings of Hogwarts Legacy 2, given how flawlessly the original game launched. Although Avalanche has undoubtedly got some hidden talents and twists planned for the next installment, there’s still much scope to refine aspects that were exceptionally well-executed in the first part – notably, the way the game and its storyline seamlessly integrate holiday seasons into the school year.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Should Lean More Into the Holidays at the School
Christmas and Halloween Were Underutilized in Hogwarts Legacy
If Hogwarts Legacy 2 continues the story of another student at the famous school, it would be wise for the developers to build upon the holiday seasons they incorporated in the original game. While Hogwarts Legacy effectively portrayed the autumn and winter seasons within the game, there was limited engagement with the holidays themselves. The seasonal adjustments mainly serve as aesthetic alterations to the castle and its surroundings; significant narrative attention is not given to Halloween and Christmas, two occasions that have strongly resonated with fans due to their close association with the franchise.
In the storyline, it’s not essential to devote extensive space; instead, keep the attention primarily on the primary or secondary narratives that the game aims to convey. To make the game more engaging, they could approach these elements in a manner similar to mainline books or films. For instance, short missions centered around Hogwarts preparing for holidays might offer an enjoyable, everyday-life perspective, demonstrating their influence on the school’s culture and student body. However, it is during Halloween where the developers have ample room for creativity.
What Hogwarts Legacy 2 Can Do For Halloween and Christmas Content
In terms of a witchcraft and wizardry franchise like Hogwarts Legacy 2, there are countless ways it could honor Halloween within the game. However, out of all the ideas being considered, one that stands out as particularly promising is a terrifying mission set in the Forbidden Forest.
Recently, the ominous and threatening nature of the Prohibited Woodland seems to have lessened. Once a place that was truly terrifying and dangerous, it has lost its fearsome edge after multiple main characters from the series ventured within without any significant repercussions. It’s easy to overlook why it’s forbidden in the first place. Introducing a quest within the Prohibited Woodland on the most frightening night of the year would be an ideal way to infuse more horror aspects into the game, while also restoring some of the initial dread that the Forbidden Forest once instilled within the franchise.
Although Christmas is significantly featured in the Harry Potter series, the game version doesn’t offer many options for celebrating it, as Hogwarts empties out during the last two weeks of the year. However, if the upcoming game’s character doesn’t have a home to go to, they could choose to stay at Hogwarts over the break. This would not only be a nostalgic reference to the early Christmas scenes in the initial Harry Potter books where Harry and Ron spent the holiday together at school, but also a peaceful moment for building relationships between the new characters in Hogwarts Legacy.
