Highlights
- Hogwarts Legacy excelled at bringing the iconic Hogwarts School to life, sparking speculation about a potential sequel.
- If one happens, it should address the absence of a well-written gamekeeper like Hagrid in the game, as it left a noticeable gap in the Hogwarts experience.
- While the current game features a barely seen gamekeeper, a potential sequel should expand on this role for a more meaningful connection, giving them a proper speaking role and a presence in quests.
As a devoted Potterhead since my childhood Hogwarts days, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the Hogwarts Legacy sequel that’s been whispering in the wind like Dumbledore’s secrets. While the game captured the magical essence of the school and its surroundings beautifully, it left us yearning for a character as iconic as Hagrid.
In 2023, Hogwarts Legacy, developed by Avalanche Software, introduced an immersive role-playing game focusing on wizards, offering players a chance to explore the iconic Hogwarts school from the Harry Potter series. Although it had some flaws, Hogwarts Legacy became the top-selling game of the year. The game effectively brought the Hogwarts grounds and buildings to life, sparking talk about a possible sequel in the future.
To date, neither Warner Bros. nor Avalanche Software has explicitly acknowledged a follow-up to Hogwarts Legacy, yet its strong sales suggest it’s highly probable. The game showcases many elements that set the Harry Potter series apart, from the four Houses to magical creatures such as Hippogriffs. Nevertheless, there are aspects missing from the game that could have made Hogwarts more immersive. The omission of Quidditch was a significant drawback, while the lack of a compelling gamekeeper character also weakens the overall atmosphere of Hogwarts.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Sequel Would Be Wise to Introduce a Gamekeeper
An Iconic Role in the Franchise is Sorely Missed
In Hogwarts Legacy, since it’s set about 100 years before the Harry Potter series, you might notice the absence of a gamekeeper character. Hagrid, who becomes an essential figure and friend to Harry in his journey, is notably missing in this game. Hagrid’s care for the diverse creatures he looks after is a significant aspect that endears him to fans within the Harry Potter storyline.
In Hagrid’s eyes, his pets are not merely animals; they’re like cherished family members. This heartwarming trait contributes significantly to the unique atmosphere of Hogwarts School. Having someone who cares for the diverse magical creatures roaming the grounds makes the school a safer and friendlier place. From Fluffy, the three-headed dog, to Norbert, the Norwegian Ridgeback dragon, Hagrid’s deep respect for animals is an admirable trait that any continuation of the Hogwarts Legacy should reflect.
In Hogwarts Legacy, many elements inspired by Harry Potter are present, yet it seems they fell short in creating a character as endearing and welcoming as Hagrid. While there’s no lack of magical creatures for players to encounter during their adventure, introducing a guardian figure in a potential sequel could be a heartfelt tribute to the original series.
Hogwarts Legacy Only Offers a Glimpse at its Gamekeeper
In essence, while there is a gamekeeper character in Hogwarts Legacy, his presence is minimal and he doesn’t significantly contribute to the storyline. He can be spotted maintaining the school grounds, but that’s about it when it comes to his involvement in the narrative. His identity is only known as the gamekeeper of Hogwarts during the 1890s, with no other details revealed, not even his name. This decision by Avalanche Software seems unfortunate, as it denies players the opportunity to form a relationship with the gamekeeper reminiscent of Harry’s bond with Hagrid.
As a dedicated fan of Hogwarts Legacy, I can’t wait for any potential sequel to delve deeper into the gamekeeper role or perhaps introduce a new one, reminiscent of the beloved Hagrid from the Harry Potter series. The absence of such a character is palpable when playing this game, and it’s hard not to miss the warmth and charm he brought to Hogwarts. Despite being set in a different era at the school, incorporating characters that echo the source material could help bridge the gap between the two worlds, making them feel more interconnected and immersive.
