For decades, the Harry Potter series has reigned supreme in popular culture, and Hogwarts Legacy stands out as its most successful video game adaptation. Unsurprisingly, given that the first Harry Potter book came out nearly three decades ago, some disputes have arisen within the fanbase. Regrettably, these controversies have tarnished the image of this cherished cultural phenomenon for many devoted Potter fans, even as new installments like Hogwarts Legacy keep being released.
Regrettably, the release of Hogwarts Legacy didn’t manage to clear up the reputation of the Harry Potter franchise. Although the game garnered positive feedback from both players and critics, it was also met with boycotts upon launch. Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games made an effort to address fan concerns within the game, but their approach was criticized heavily. Clearly, Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games cannot attempt to sidestep controversy in the same manner as Hogwarts Legacy did, should a sequel ever materialize.
J.K. Rowling Has Hurt Harry Potter and Hogwarts’ Legacy
Discussing the buildup to the release of Hogwarts Legacy, there was an ongoing debate centered around J.K. Rowling’s controversial statements about transgender individuals. These comments, combined with renewed scrutiny of racial portrayals in the Harry Potter series, have significantly shifted the perception of Harry Potter from a dominant force in young adult literature to a bittersweet, complex reminiscence. With most of Rowling’s comments appearing on her former Twitter account and her views being brought into public light when she liked a tweet in 2018 that described transgender women as “women dressed as men,” she has since continued to voice her opinions on the topic, earning her the label of TERF – a trans-exclusionary radical feminist.
As a passionate cinema-goer and avid fan of magical stories, I’ve been thrilled to see Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games take a stand by including a transgender character in their game, Hogwarts Legacy. In this enchanting world, Sirona Ryan serves as the main bartender at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. Her unwavering loyalty to Hogwarts and its students is evident when she bravely confronts Victor Rookwood in a pivotal scene. While it’s heartening to witness more diverse representation in media, Sirona Ryan doesn’t significantly contribute to Hogwarts Legacy‘s narrative beyond being a minor non-player character (NPC). Some critics view her inclusion as a symbolic gesture rather than a substantial counterargument against the controversial views of J.K. Rowling.
It’s important to note that adding a transgender character to J.K. Rowling’s most renowned work, such as Hogwarts Legacy, doesn’t necessarily rectify her harmful comments towards the transgender community. In all probability, Rowling’s views on this matter are deeply ingrained and unlikely to change. However, Avalanche Software or Warner Bros. Games can still aim to enhance the representation of transgender individuals in their future projects, such as Hogwarts Legacy 2, possibly to mitigate potential boycotts caused by Rowling’s statements.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Will Likely Take the Same Approach as its Predecessor
Transgender fans of Harry Potter continue to exist despite J.K. Rowling’s statements, so Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games might broaden the character Sirona Ryan in Hogwarts Legacy 2 as a means to potentially avoid a potential boycott. This expansion should be significant and integral to the storyline, rather than merely maintaining Sirona Ryan’s role from the previous game. This development would demonstrate that Sirona Ryan is not just tokenistic representation but a substantial character with depth.
Immediately, several possibilities come to light regarding Sirona Ryan’s character in Hogwarts Legacy 2. If the Three Broomsticks tavern plays a significant role in the game, having Sirona as the proprietor could greatly impact the plot. She might protect her patrons, including potential main characters, just like she did with students in the hypothetical sequel. If the game follows a mystery theme, Sirona Ryan could serve as a reliable adult or mentor figure often found in stories led by teenagers. She could be a frequent quest provider and ally for various tasks, appearing consistently throughout the entire game. Another intriguing idea is to feature a transgender student among the main protagonists or companions in Hogwarts Legacy 2, contributing to diversity and representation within the game’s narrative.
Over the past seven years, the opinions expressed by J.K. Rowling about the transgender community have unfortunately tarnished a medium that was once universally cherished. It’s ultimately up to fans to decide if they can separate the art from the artist, but Avalanche cannot undo Rowling’s actions. The developers of Hogwarts Legacy, however, have more power than just adding a minor trans character in their next game. Perhaps, characters like Sirona Ryan could be given more prominence in Hogwarts Legacy 2, alongside transgender students, to provide a welcoming environment for trans Potterheads who choose to play the game.
