As a dedicated fan with over two decades of immersing myself in the magical world of Harry Potter, I must say that Hogwarts Legacy has managed to capture my heart and transport me back to the enchanting era of the late 1800s. The game’s commitment to preserving the iconic elements of the series while offering a fresh, unique perspective is nothing short of impressive.

Despite its unique elements and strong connection to its original content, Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t deviate significantly from Harry Potter imagery. Given that it’s set within Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, this isn’t surprising. Fortunately, Avalanche introduced some visual changes in the open-world Scottish Highlands setting and crafted a story centered around Ancient Magic. Essentially, the plot of Hogwarts Legacy could have transpired during Harry Potter’s timeline without raising any eyebrows if not for the characters’ attire, which remains one of the game’s few connections to its late-1800s setting.

It’s quite simple to overlook the fact that the events in “Hogwarts Legacy” transpire a century before the modern-day Harry Potter storyline, given how much the castle resembles its portrayal in current Harry Potter media. This differentiation from the ongoing happenings in Harry Potter is beneficial, but Warner Bros. couldn’t resist sprinkling numerous Easter eggs and references to beloved content that fans are fond of. Despite the lackluster gear in “Hogwarts Legacy”, the authentic and immersive aspect of unique clothing customization is far more captivating than what a contemporary game could offer.

A Modern-Day Harry Potter RPG’s Customization Would Be Bland Beyond Belief

In a modern-day setting, even as far as the Harry Potter series is concerned, the customization options in Hogwarts Legacy would fall short. Instead of an array of clothing items, it would primarily consist of ordinary items like t-shirts and jeans, with limited variations beyond color and layering. On the other hand, Hogwarts Legacy offers unique, fashionable articles that, while not universally appealing, certainly deviate from contemporary norms.

The advantage of contemporary clothing is that it’s interesting to see how students pick out their casual wear for trips to Hogsmeade, as they don’t have to adhere to their school uniform. However, similar to the clothing choices available for Hunter in ‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Abbey, these options might be limited to basic sweatshirts and t-shirts with graphics. Just like ‘Marvel’s Midnight Suns’, it’s likely that they wouldn’t resist including graphic tees or hoodies with meta references, but these wouldn’t offer much creativity or immersion.

In the late 1800s, the game Hogwarts Legacy presents an opportunity to avoid creative limitations. The everyday attire consists of button-down shirts layered under sweaters or vests, creating a subtle and stylish display during character customization that remains consistent throughout the gameplay.

Why a Hogwarts Legacy 2 Would Be Likely to Stick to the 1800s

If a sequel is planned for Hogwarts Legacy, it appears that the game will maintain its period-specific decor. This time period and its style are among the few distinct characteristics of Hogwarts Legacy, and abandoning it for a contemporary setting could be disastrous because it would be extremely challenging for Avalanche to establish a unique and genuine identity within the wizarding world. A modern sequel might struggle to avoid references to the happenings and characters in the Harry Potter series and may feel compelled to incorporate elements similar to Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which is not ideal.

By reaching as far into history as possible, Avalanche can savor the iconography it generates and exciting new tales within the wizarding world that remarkably don’t require any connection to Harry Potter. While Hogwarts Legacy is deeply rooted in Harry Potter, the 1800s setting enables Avalanche to bypass the Boy Who Lived and a significant aspect of that is featuring characters wearing distinct attire from an era predating Harry’s birth.
