Among the top metroidvania games for beginners, Hollow Knight stands out as one of the finest. Though it offers a substantial challenge, it excels in embodying the genre’s formula. Once you conquer it, you will find that you have mastered similar titles with ease.
To achieve this, though, you’ll need to conquer numerous challenges along your path through Hallownest, facing off against its diverse array of formidable bosses.
Among the most recognized, you might encounter the “Dream Warriors”, resembling powerful insects, which you will only come across after obtaining the Dream Nail.
Engaging with these adversaries rewards you with Essence and presents a variety of challenges, ranging from an enjoyable stroll to a harrowing descent into the underworld. You’ll find confirmation of their difficulty through this list ranking the seven Toughest Dream Warrior Leaders.
7. Xero
The Easiest Boss To No-Hit
Location | Resting Grounds |
Reward | 100 Essence |
Despite the fact that I started playing Hollow Knight from its initial launch, I can’t remember a single time when I lost against Xero in our battles.
In your journey, the initial Dream Warrior you’ll meet is placed quite visibly near the spot where you acquire the Dream Nail. Consequently, the challenge level for this character is relatively low compared to others in your adventure.
He primarily moves laterally and launches slow projectiles at you that are relatively simple to dodge since you’re always running after him in circles.
Given that the landscape is straight and the fighting pace is manageable, it’s unlikely that Xero will present a challenge during the course of the game.
6. Elder Hu
Just a Matter of Timing
Location | Fungal Wastes |
Reward | 100 Essence |
Following Xero’s example, Elder Hu is an extremely accessible boss due to his limited moveset.
Yet, he possesses two attack moves rather than one, which adds a touch of intricacy, compelling you to discern his rhythm to determine the best placement for yourself.
Besides having the advantage of teleportation, he becomes elusive and quicker, frequently extending the duration of battles and heightening the chances of errors due to distraction, thereby requiring a greater level of focus.
Regardless, if your timing is correct, defeating this ancient warrior proves to be more challenging than emerging victorious, which means he remains one of the simpler opponents within the game.
5. Gorb
The Spear Spammer
Location | Howling Cliffs |
Reward | 100 Essence |
Gorb, being the initial Dream Warrior on the roster, might present an issue due to his battle having several stages.
As his health decreases, he continuously moves about and launches faster and more numerous “dream spears”. Towards the end, this results in a mesmerizing display of projectiles flying through the air.
If you don’t pay attention and judge the distance properly, you might find yourself getting struck by several spears before reaching him, since there’s little chance for healing.
This boss isn’t hard-to-handle by any means, but unlike past ones, it does require a bit of strategic thinking before making each move.
4. No Eyes
An Environmental Fight
Location | Greenpath |
Reward | 200 Essence |
In the confrontation against Dream Warriors, No Eyes presents a significant challenge that’s unlike any other, making it particularly challenging.
The threat isn’t direct assaults by the enemy, instead, it’s relentless missiles that streak across the screen horizontally and dangerous spikes lurking beneath.
As a result, the entire battle involves pursuing No Eyes, all while dodging an unending flow of spirits that are coming towards you. It may appear simpler than it actually is at first glance.
For enthusiasts of metroidvania and platformer games, we’re all too familiar with the necessity, yet complexity, of showing patience. And that’s exactly what the battle against No Eyes calls for, as it tests your endurance and patience to emerge victorious.
3. Galien
Between Orbs and Crashes
Location | Deepnest |
Reward | 200 Essence |
In Dream Warrior battles, it’s common to find recurring patterns. To some degree, many of them exhibit a consistent series of moves following a particular sequence. However, unlike most opponents, Galien doesn’t adhere to such predictable patterns.
Instead of what has been seen before, the boss’ eyes appear unpredictable and challenging to guess, even the scythe he hurls your way seems to bounce unexpectedly.
With the final moments of the battle looming, I find myself cornered by three menacing energy blasts, each eager to take me down. Meanwhile, my eyes are fixed on the boss, determined to land those crucial hits before time runs out.
If fortune favors you, you can swiftly deplete Galen’s health with spells, keeping him stationary, but the outcome of the battle’s complexity is uncertain, relying on chance.
2. Marmu
A Fun Bouncing Game
Location | Queen’s Garden |
Reward | 150 Essence |
Instead of relying on patterns like the other fights, the battle against Marmu primarily tests your reflexes, making it an exceptionally challenging encounter.
As swiftness and uncertainty escalate, your boss approaches you in a round manner, seemingly appearing from directions that suggest instant teleportation.
In this situation, it’s crucial to stay constantly vigilant against Marmu’s actions, as there’s hardly any moment for contemplation or devising strategies.
You primarily rely on your quick reflexes to respond to the caterpillar’s attacks, which intensifies the battle, resulting in it being won or lost in a heartbeat.
1. Markoth
The Devil Incarnate
Location | Kingdom’s Edge |
Reward | 250 Essence |
In my opinion, Hollow Knight stands out as the finest metroidvania game ever created. It boasts some of the most outstanding boss encounters and a multitude of captivating locations.
It seems necessary for me to clear up some points prior to expressing my strong dislike for Markoth. To put it mildly, he’s quite straightforward, lacks creativity, and his appearances in the game consistently leave me feeling uninspired. In fact, they often make me contemplate quitting the game altogether.
He’s simply a formidable adversary. With his defensive barriers and ranged attacks, approaching him unscathed is virtually unachievable. His defenses are impregnable, he assaults from every direction, and the very layout of the environment makes getting to him challenging on its own.
I’ve encountered numerous enthusiastic Hollow Knight fans up to now, yet I’ve never come across one who didn’t struggle significantly with defeating Morkoth. In fact, he is undeniably the most challenging Dream Warrior within the game.
