Hollow Knight: All Whispering Root Locations

In the game Hollow Knight, the Seer is a key NPC. After finding and activating the statues in the Resting Grounds, players receive the Dream Nail, which lets them access the dream world.

Throughout the game, the Dream Nail lets you interact with characters to learn their thoughts and battle the Dream Warriors. You’ll also find strange, tree-like growths called Whispering Roots scattered around Hallownest. Hitting these Roots with the Dream Nail releases Essence, which you can collect. They also display mysterious messages for you to solve. Collecting Essence strengthens the Dream Nail, and the Seer will reward you based on how much you’ve gathered.

Hollow Knight features 15 Whispering Roots hidden throughout the game. Players can choose to purchase a map pin from Iselda to help locate them (once they’ve unlocked the Dream Nail), or they can find a guide below detailing each root’s location.

Ancestral Mound Whispering Root Location

After defeating the False Knight, players will find themselves in the Ancestral Mound. This is the same place the Shaman Snail trapped them after they learned the Vengeful Spirit spell – the one needed to beat Elder Baldur.

In the left area of the Ancestral Mound, players can discover a large Soul Totem. Above it, they’ll find a Lifeblood Cocoon, which gives the Knight temporary masks.

The Whispering Root tree releases 42 Essence, which players must gather to finish the quest. Using the Dream Nail a second time will then display a message.

City of Tears Whispering Root Location

The City of Tears Whispering Root can be found below the City Storerooms Stag Station.

I remember entering this huge room filled with floating platforms. There were three ways to go on the right side, and I found the Whispering Root along the lowest one. Once I hit it with the Dream Nail, 28 Essence just burst out into the room – it was amazing!

Once players use the Dream Nail on the Whispering Root a second time, they’ll see this message:

Crystal Peak Whispering Root Location

After passing the bench where you first meet the Crystal Guardian, continue upwards and to the right. You’ll reach Hallownest’s Crown, located northeast of Crystal Peak – a key location for learning about the kingdom’s past.

Before you reach the Crown in Hallownest, you’ll encounter Crystallized Husks guarding an area where you can find the Whispering Root. Collecting it will give you 21 Essence. After using Dream Nail on the tree again, a message will appear.

Deepnest Whispering Root Location

You can get to the Deepnest Whispering Root most easily by going down from the Queen’s Gardens into Deepnest, or by taking the Stag Station in the Distant Village.

To the right of the Distant Village, behind a Deepling, you’ll find the Whispering Root. Hitting it with the Dream Nail once rewards you with 45 Essence. If you hit it again, the tree will share some information with you.

Forgotten Crossroads Whispering Root Location

Right across from the Grubfather, observant players can notice a crack in the ceiling with a faint glow. The Knight can use the nail to break through this cracked section, revealing a hidden area. Once inside, use the Mantis Claw to climb up and you’ll find three Geo deposits nearby. To the left, you’ll discover the Whispering Root.

Once players interact with the tree, it will release 29 Essence, filling the chamber with the floating platforms. Players should watch out for enemies in this area, as the Forgotten Crossroads might change its appearance depending on when they return. If they try to use the Dream Nail again, they’ll receive a message.

Fungal Wastes Whispering Root Location (Near Fog Canyon Shortcut)

Across from the path to Leg Eater, there’s a small pool of acid. Players need to swim through it to access a shortcut to Fog Canyon via the Fungal Waste. In this area, you’ll find the Whispering Root, which gives you 20 Essence. If you Dream Nail the Whispering Root again, you’ll see a specific message.

Fungal Wastes Whispering Root Location (North of Mantis Village)

Once players get the Mantis Claw near Mantis Village, they can climb up to the hidden Whispering Root. This Root gives 18 Essence and displays a new message when you use the Dream Nail on it again.

Greenpath Whispering Root Location

Traveling to the Whispering Root through Greenpath is easier with the Mothwing Cloak/Shade Cloak, Isma’s Tear, and Monarch Wings. These items help navigate the large acid pool and allow you to bounce off the backs of Durandoos along the way.

Players can earn 44 Essence from this Whispering Root and this message:

The Hive Whispering Root Location

The quickest route to the Hive is by taking the tram from Deepnest or the Ancient Basin to Kingdom’s Edge. Once you arrive, head right, being careful to avoid the spike pits, until you find two small Hivelings. These creatures are near a hidden entrance to the Hive. You can open the entrance by attacking the fragile wall with your nail or by using a spell to break it.

Just to the right of the bench in the Hive, players can find a Whispering Root that gives them 10 Essence. Be careful though – Hive Soldiers live in this area and can quickly close the distance with their fast drill attacks. When you interact with the Whispering Root, you’ll receive a strange message that says:

Howling Cliffs Whispering Root Location

To reach the Howling Cliffs, players need to go back to the very beginning of the game – the area where the Knight first dropped down. Use the Mantis Claw to climb the tall wall to the far left of Dirtmouth. Once you’re in that first chamber, turn left and you’ll find a hidden climbable path that leads directly to the Howling Cliffs.

You’ll find Cornifer about halfway down the cliffs, and the Whispering Root a little further below him. Using the Dream Nail on the Whispering Root will give you 46 Essence and unlock a new message.

Kingdom’s Edge Whispering Root Location

Kingdom’s Edge is a key location in Hollow Knight for understanding the game’s story. Getting to the Whispering Root is made much simpler with the Monarch Wings, which help with the tricky platforming and can even make dodging the Primal Aspids easier.

Players can reach the Whispering Root within Kingdom’s Edge in a couple of ways. They can either climb down from the Colosseum of Fools, which is at the northernmost part of the area, or use a hidden passage in King’s Station. To find this passage, go to the lowest platform and head to the right, where you’ll find two Vengeflies. From there, swim to the right to discover a new area that leads into Kingdom’s Edge.

If you’ve unlocked the Tower of Love – accessible through this area – there’s another exit to Kingdom’s Edge that leads right to where you need to go. Completing this Whispering Root will give you 51 Essence, and using the Dream Nail again will reveal a hidden message.

Queen’s Gardens Whispering Root Location

You can find the Whispering Root in the far southeastern corner of Queen’s Gardens, just to the right of the bench overlooking the area. Be careful while exploring Queen’s Gardens, as you’ll likely run into spikes, Mantis Traitors, and moving platforms.

The Whispering Root area features challenging platforming sections, so any upgrades that help the Knight move around will be useful for collecting the 29 Essence found there. After using Dream Nail on it again, the Whispering Root will reveal another mysterious message.

Resting Grounds Whispering Root Location

Players will probably find this Whispering Root first, as it becomes available after getting the Dream Nail. The Seer tells the Knight about a tree nearby where they can gather 20 Essence, just outside her room. The message you receive from this specific Whispering Root mentions the Seer directly.

Royal Waterways Whispering Root Location

While often thought of as being within the Royal Waterways, the Whispering Root actually grows in the area between the Royal Waterways and the Ancient Basin.

Players can reach the Royal Waterways from the Ancient Basin in one of two ways: either by taking the Stagways to the Hidden Station, or by unlocking the tram line that connects Deepnest, the Ancient Basin, and Kingdom’s Edge.

After you pass the tram station, you’ll find paths leading to the Royal Waterways. Head to the right and carefully cross the broken pillars – watch out for enemies! – until you reach the room with the broken elevator. In the far right corner of this room, you’ll discover a small alcove containing a Whispering Root. Interacting with it will grant you 35 Essence, and Dream Nailing it again will reveal a message.

Spirits’ Glade Whispering Root Location

As a huge fan of Hollow Knight, I always loved the little details, and it’s cool to know how it all started. The game was initially funded through Kickstarter, and they actually surpassed their goal, raising over $57,000 (AUD) by the end of 2014! Team Cherry, as a thank you to everyone who supported them, created this beautiful area called the Spirits’ Glade. It’s a really neat touch that they included messages from the backers inside the game itself – a permanent tribute to the people who helped make it happen.

You’ll find Spirits’ Glade in the Resting Grounds, but it starts locked. To open it, you need to gather 200 Essence and give it to the Seer. They’ll reward your effort by unlocking the door. Once inside, you’ll meet a spirit named Revek, who will warn you that hurting any of the spirits there will have serious consequences.

Players who want to gather Essence more safely can find the Whispering Root in the upper-right corner of the Glade. It offers 34 Essence, and its message is as follows:

Rewards from the Seer in Exchange for Essence

As mentioned earlier, the Seer trades rewards for Essence you gather while exploring Hallownest. These rewards include things like Relics, Charms, upgrade materials, and even in-game achievements.
