During a recent Nintendo presentation, Team Cherry announced that the Switch 2 version of Hollow Knight, previously teased, would be available to download that same day, February 5th. Current Switch owners will receive a free upgrade. While Nintendo has been releasing enhanced versions of games for the Switch 2 since its launch last year, Team Cherry is approaching this release in a unique way.
The indie studio has been incredibly busy lately. After years of development and a long wait, they finally released Hollow Knight: Silksong, and it’s been a huge success, winning numerous industry awards. While some players found the game quite challenging, it didn’t hold it back. And they haven’t stopped there! Even with Silksong available, Team Cherry is already working on new content, including an expansion for the game and a Switch 2 Edition of the original Hollow Knight.
Hollow Knight Switch 2 Edition Enhancements
During a Nintendo presentation on February 5, 2026, Team Cherry surprised fans with a new trailer for Hollow Knight on the Switch 2. The original Hollow Knight came to the Nintendo Switch in 2018, and Silksong followed last year. Now, Team Cherry has released a special Switch 2 version of Hollow Knight immediately after the presentation. The best part? Players who already own Hollow Knight on the original Switch can download the upgrade for free.
The Switch 2 version of Hollow Knight is more than just a basic transfer of the game. Like other upgraded games for the Switch 2, it includes all the improvements originally developed for Silksong. Players can expect smoother gameplay with a faster frame rate, higher resolution, and enhanced graphics. Importantly, these upgrades aren’t limited to the Switch 2 – other platforms will also receive these improvements through updates.
Image via Team Cherry Team Cherry has a history of offering free upgrades, having released four major expansions for Hollow Knight after its initial launch. So, their approach is welcome news for Switch 2 owners, especially since Nintendo usually charges players for update packs when porting games from the original Switch. While some upgrades are affordable – Animal Crossing: New Horizons costs just $4.99 – others are more expensive. Games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Super Mario Party Jamboree TV will range from $9.99 to $19.99 to upgrade.

And for those who’ve explored the world of Silksong, a new expansion called Sea of Sorrow was announced in late 2025. While details are still limited, the reveal trailer suggested a nautical theme, featuring waves crashing behind Hornet. The expansion will be available as a free download for Silksong owners, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Given the long wait for Silksong itself, fans are likely prepared to be patient.
