Hollow Knight: Silksong Fans Have a New Clown Meme Target

The eagerly anticipated Metroidvania title from Team Cherry, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is now accessible on all platforms. So far, it appears that the game is meeting expectations and surpassing them in some ways. At present, there aren’t numerous professional reviews for the game, but Hollow Knight: Silksong currently boasts a remarkable 95/100 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, with all critics advocating for the game. The Steam user ratings are predominantly favorable as well, and while some players have expressed concerns about its high level of difficulty, the game has garnered a 91% positive rating on Steam. However, the journey to this launch was not an effortless one.

The video game titled “Hollow Knight: Silksong” was initially teased with a short trailer in 2019, but it mysteriously vanished from the spotlight for several years. Apart from occasionally releasing brief trailers, Studio Team Cherry was largely silent regarding the progress of the game’s development. This prolonged silence led fans to create memes featuring clown characters to humorously express their frustration over the game’s delayed release and the false hopes of its appearance at various showcases.

However, with the recent launch of “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” these clown memes have lost their relevance. But, there is still another highly anticipated title that fans can continue to use as a source for their humorous internet jokes.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Could Become the New Silksong for the Next Few Weeks

Among games that match Hollow Knight: Silksong for having an exceptionally long wait between announcement and release, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond could very well be at the top of the list. While Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced two years later, it’s still not been released yet, and this Nintendo-exclusive game has yet to grace store shelves even though it was initially showcased at Nintendo’s E3 2017 press conference. At its debut, Metroid Prime 4 was practically just a logo on the screen. Nintendo announced that the title would be developed by certain Bandai Namco studios in Japan and Singapore; however, this arrangement didn’t work out as planned eventually.

In 2019, Nintendo announced that they had re-started the development of “Metroid Prime 4”, as the earlier version created by Bandai Namco didn’t measure up to their internal standards. They chose to transfer the game to Retro Studios, who originally developed the “Metroid Prime” series. Notably, Retro Studios were working on a new platformer for the Nintendo Switch called “Harmony”, but this undisclosed project was scrapped to focus solely on developing “Metroid Prime 4”.

Since the launch of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in 2014, Retro Studios has yet to introduce a new game. The only titles they’ve put out since then were Metroid Prime Remastered, which came out in 2023.

After All These Years, Metroid Prime 4 Still Doesn’t Have a Proper Release Date

Nintendo hadn’t unveiled any trailers for “Metroid Prime 4” until June 2024, when they officially stated that the game would launch on the Nintendo Switch around 2025. More recently this year, it was disclosed that a Switch 2 version of the game is in development, offering improved graphics and better frame rates. However, despite numerous demonstrations of “Metroid Prime 4” in recent months, Nintendo has been rather secretive about the exact launch date for the game.

The Rumored Nintendo Direct this Month Could Feature Metroid Prime 4 in Some Capacity

It seems that Metroid Prime 4 might face a delay, potentially moving its release to early 2026, although it’s less likely than the delay Hollow Knight: Silksong experienced in 2022. However, there are whispers of a Nintendo Direct happening in September this year, and many believe Metroid Prime 4 could make an appearance. If it doesn’t show up at the event, fans might express their frustration with a flurry of clown memes, similar to what happened with Hollow Knight: Silksong.
